What is Set Dancing?
Set dancing is a form of social dancing which has been popular in Ireland for over 150 years, danced by people of all ages - I know set dancers who are over 80. Sets are danced by four couples in a square formation, each set usually consists of three to six figures with a short pause between each. They descended from the French quadrilles, which were brought to Ireland by the British army in the nineteenth century. Irish dancers adapted the French quadrille figures to their own music and steps to form dances with great drive and enjoyment. Sets are very popular all around the world.
What to wear / bring?
Dancers are asked to wear some hard soled shoes (sneakers or shoes with a wedge heel are not advisable), bring a bottle of water and a sense of fun! No need to bring a partner.
Research has proven that dancing is one of the best forms of activity for keeping the body active and the mind alert.
What we do ...
We dance along to polkas, jigs, hornpipes, reels and waltzes. We begin with some warm-up exercises and then move on to learn the choreography of a particular set - no experience or partner required. Dancers are encouraged to attend ceilis and we take an end of term “Field Trip” to a local ceili.
Cost £4 per person per class
