This exhibition comprises a suite of twelve etchings inspired by a Hogarth series of the same name.  This collection of new works, created at the end of 2018, explores a mix of social commentary and personal statement.

What we see in this exhibition are the finest examples of the printmaker’s art, each work part of an original, limited edition, produced by hand.  Karen often works directly onto a plate without preliminary drawings, so while each is a complete work in its own right, when seen together they present a thought provoking vision of the ‘Harlot’s’ narrative.

Unlike Hogarth's blatant warning and message, there is more sensitivity, ambiguity and symbolism from a woman and a mother, resulting in a story that explores the now.

There is a mix of the witty and the dark in a medium that best suits Karen’s narrative approach and her attempts to explore a particularly elaborate and complex set of subjects.

Karen elucidates: ‘The etchings with aquatint were created directly onto the copper etching plate; the result of a thought process that lasted over a year, yet laid down spontaneously when the timing was right.’

Karen is currently a Trustee and Director (Treasurer) of Belfast Print Workshop as well as owning and running the jewellery brand, Ghost & Bonesetter.  She has recently been elected to the very prestigious 'Prism Print International' which means her artworks will be touring to a number of international venues, including Japan.

Karen studied art at Belfast and Manchester, graduating with a BA Hons in 1988. Since then, she has been a successful artist, printmaker and businesswoman; some may remember her from Coppermoon, the Art and Fine Craft Gallery, based in Belfast for many years.

The exhibition runs at the ArtisAnn Gallery from Thursday 2nd May to Saturday 1st June with a preview on Wednesday 1st May from 6 to 8pm
