Michael Hughes performs a literary feat in his latest novel Country. Taking inspiration from the oldest tale of all, Homer’s Iliad, he tells the tale of Northern Ireland in 1996, on the brink of ceasefire after twenty-five years of conflict.

When an IRA man’s wife turns informer, he and his brother gather old comrades for an assault on the local army base. But when the squad’s sniper refuses to fight, the SAS are sent in to crush them before it can wreck the fragile truce and drag the whole region back to the darkest days of The Troubles.

This novel explores the brutality of armed conflict and the bitter tragedy of those on both sides who offer their lives to defend their country.
