Over its long history,

Dungannon has often been

at the centre of major

events in Irish history. One

of these was the ‘Great

Convention’ held in the

town in February 1782.

This convention was

organised by the

Volunteers, one of the most

celebrated military forces

in Irish history, and was an

important demonstration

in support of political

reform in Ireland.

This talk looks at the

background to the

convention, how it

was conducted and

the resolutions that

were passed at it.

The local aspects of the

story are explored and

key figures highlighted,

including the Earl

of Charlemont, the

commander-in-chief

of the Volunteers.
