{"id":11351,"date":"2016-05-03T09:59:14","date_gmt":"2016-05-03T08:59:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/?p=11351"},"modified":"2016-05-03T09:59:14","modified_gmt":"2016-05-03T08:59:14","slug":"antrim-and-newtownabbey-borough-council-will-make-may-purple-to-raise-awareness-of-stroke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2016\/05\/antrim-and-newtownabbey-borough-council-will-make-may-purple-to-raise-awareness-of-stroke\/","title":{"rendered":"Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council will Make May Purple to raise Awareness of Stroke"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>On Wednesday 11 May 2016 council buildings in Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough are lighting up purple to mark \u2018Make May Purple\u2019 \u2013 the Stroke Association\u2019s campaign to raise awareness of stroke.<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/press1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-11352\" title=\"press\" src=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/press1-838x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"402\" height=\"491\" \/><\/a>The charity\u2019s annual awareness month is all about encouraging communities to get involved in something purple to raise awareness of Northern Ireland\u2019s 4th biggest killer.\u00a0 Mossley Mill, Ballyclare Town Hall and Antrim Civic Centre will join other iconic buildings around the UK in supporting the cause by lighting up purple.<\/p>\n<p>Kate Gorman had a stroke in 2005 and now volunteers with the Stroke Association Newtownabbey group. She joined Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Thomas Hogg to launch the Make May Purple campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStroke happens in an instant and it changes people\u2019s lives forever.\u00a0 A quarter of all strokes happen to young people like me and about half of stroke survivors are left with a permanent disability. The Stroke Association wants to prevent strokes and help those who have had strokes get the support they need, whether that\u2019s via local groups, 1 to 1 support or by campaigning for better stroke services. I\u2019m absolutely delighted that Antrim &amp; Newtownabbey Council is showing their support for Make May Purple and I hope the local community will get involved too. Whatever you choose to do, whether it\u2019s holding a bake sale or signing up for an event, it\u2019s an easy and fun way to show your support for local stroke survivors\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Thomas Hogg commented \u201cWe are delighted to support the Stroke Association&#8217;s \u2018Make May Purple\u2019 campaign by lighting up our council buildings in purple.
