{"id":13621,"date":"2017-03-14T19:21:47","date_gmt":"2017-03-14T18:21:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/?p=13621"},"modified":"2017-03-14T19:22:19","modified_gmt":"2017-03-14T18:22:19","slug":"stargazing-sessions-in-cushendun-and-ballintoy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2017\/03\/stargazing-sessions-in-cushendun-and-ballintoy\/","title":{"rendered":"Stargazing sessions in Cushendun and Ballintoy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>Have you ever wanted to learn more about the night sky?<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-13622\" src=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/press2-16-1024x575.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" \/>Causeway Coast and Glens Museum Service is holding two stargazing events in the coming weeks where you will have the opportunity to learn all about constellations, stars and planets.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s part of the \u2018Comet Man\u2019 project, funded by the Royal Society.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%; text-autospace: none;\">The events will highlight the life and work of Cushendun born astronomer Andrew Claude de la Cherois Crommelin (1865-1939), who is perhaps best known for predicting the return of Halley\u2019s Comet in 1910, which earned him the nickname \u2018The Comet Man\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;\">His contribution to astronomy is significant, with a total of four astronomic objects named after him including a crater on the moon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;\">The first stargazing event takes place on Friday 31<sup>st<\/sup> March at Glenmona House in Cushendun. Beginning at 7:45pm, the evening will include a short presentation by Dr Nicholas Wright. This will be followed by an observation session until 10.30pm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;\">The second event takes place on Friday 7<sup>th<\/sup> May at Ballintoy Harbour from 8:15pm until 10.30pm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;\">The Northern Ireland Amateur Astronomy Society will provide telescopes and guidance during the stargazing sessions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;\">Participants are advised to wear appropiate clothing and footwear.\u00a0 Children must be accompanied by an adult and supervised at all times.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;\">Admission is free however booking is essential as places are limited.\u00a0 To book please contact 028 2766 0230 or email : <a href=\"mailto:Ballymoneyvic@causewaycoastandglens.gov.uk\">Ballymoneyvic@causewaycoastandglens.gov.uk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Have you ever wanted to learn more about the night sky?
