{"id":14174,"date":"2017-05-14T23:50:51","date_gmt":"2017-05-14T22:50:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/?p=14174"},"modified":"2017-05-14T23:52:33","modified_gmt":"2017-05-14T22:52:33","slug":"its-good-to-walk-before-you-run","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2017\/05\/its-good-to-walk-before-you-run\/","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s good to walk before you run!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>The launch of \u201cWalking Football\u201d took place at Antrim Forum Leisure Centre with a friendly between the Move More participants, Year 10\u2019s at Parkhall College and a team from Antrim Forum.<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-14175\" src=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/press2-24.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"231\" \/> This was the result of a pilot programme initiated by Alan McCausland, Move More Macmillan co-ordinator and Samuel McIlveen\u00a0Everybody Active 2020 Football Coach who have delivered seven weeks of Walking Football.\u00a0 This programme has proved exceptionally beneficial to the health and wellbeing of seven cancer clients, clients from Cardiac rehab and volunteers who made up the teams.\u00a0\u00a0 The Year 10 pupils from Parkhall College have also got involved as part of a health and fitness project linked with Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council and Macmillan.<\/p>\n<p>Alan McCausland stated \u201cWalking Football was initially ran as a pilot programme to gauge interest for clients with a cancer diagnosis through the Macmillan Move More project in conjunction with the Council\u201d.\u00a0 He added \u201cfootball had been a pastime the participants loved and they wanted to get back into the sport as part of their recovery.\u00a0 With support from volunteers to add to the numbers and input from clients from Antrim Cardiac rehab class based at the Antrim Forum, the class has run successfully during the last seven weeks on Friday afternoons\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor John Scott attended the event and even kicked off the start of the first match.\u00a0 Councillor Scott commented \u201cI am delighted to see the introduction of the \u201cWalking Football\u201d programme at Antrim Forum and I am encouraged by the health benefits that it provides to many recovering from cancer and heart problems.\u201d\u00a0 He added \u201cwatching the matches has shown me that walking instead of running needs as much concentration as playing the game\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Alan and Samuel McIlveen Everybody Active 2020 Football coach will now deliver the programme on Fridays at Antrim Forum 12.45-1.30pm.\u00a0 Walking Football is available to anyone interested, male or female regardless of health conditions.\u00a0 For a Macmillan referral call Alan McCausland at 07587 657488 or email <a href=\"mailto:alan.mccausland@antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk\">alan.mccausland@antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk<\/a> or contact Samuel McIlveen at Antrim Forum 028 9446 4131 for more information.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The launch of \u201cWalking Football\u201d took place at Antrim Forum Leisure Centre with a friendly between the Move More participants, Year 10\u2019s at Parkhall College and a team from Antrim Forum.
