The\u00a0riotous comedy has been awarded number one spot on the Rising Comedy list, published\u00a0by Ents24,\u00a0the nation’s biggest live show guide. The list calculates which shows are most popular with the public\u00a0by counting the\u00a0people who sign\u00a0up with\u00a0Ents24 to\u00a0know more\u00a0about\u00a0specific performances.<\/p>\n
The Dolls popularity has been reinforced in other ways, too. One YouTube clip of a\u00a0recent show\u00a0bagged nearly 3m hits.<\/p>\n
Which is great news for Gayle Telfer Stevens and Louise McCarthy, the crack comedy\u00a0duo who play ‘the Dolls’, a pair of sassy Scottish scrubbers. (Quite literally, they clean pubs and toilets for a living.)<\/p>\n
In the show, Agnes and Sadie\u00a0have hit the\u00a0‘Doll drums’ and\u00a0are desperate\u00a0to take\u00a0a break from the Toilet Duck and scouring pads.<\/p>\n
They’re hungry for\u00a0the sort of Mr Muscle that doesn’t come with\u00a0an\u00a0aerosol nodule.<\/p>\n
So when Agnes wins\u00a0top prize at Big Bella’s Bingo,\u00a0an all-expenses paid holiday in Greece, she decides to take Sadie along\u00a0for the ride.<\/p>\n
What follows is hot weather, hotter men\u00a0and fending off the\u00a0hot flushes of maudlin, muddle age\u00a0for as long as possible.<\/p>\n
The Dolls Abroad has bucket loads of banter, sing-a-long sauciness and\u00a0its own unique\u00a0energy, which is\u00a0not to be missed. It’s Mrs Brown times two, with a little bit of Thelma\u00a0& Louise thrown in for good measure.<\/p>\n
Gayle and Louise –\u00a0who co-wrote he Dolls as well as starring in it –\u00a0are enjoying being at the centre of the newest showbiz sensation. However, both women are no strangers to success, and\u00a0regularly appear on stage and TV in their native Scotland\u00a0as well as\u00a0the rest of the UK.<\/p>\n
Gayle stars in River City, the Scottish version of EastEnders, and Louise appears\u00a0in Only an Excuse, a topical sports comedy.<\/p>\n
But the two friends believe what they have created with The Dolls is unique.<\/p>\n
“The chemistry between us is amazing,” says Gayle, who has also\u00a0appeared in Casualty and the\u00a0hit movie musical, Sunshine on Leith.\u00a0“We just set each other off, and the audience participation\u00a0really adds to the energy of the night. It’s\u00a0the sort of thing you just can’t replicate in a TV show or with a movie. This is what live theatre is all about – audiences and performers bonding for a great evening of fun, tears and laughter.”<\/p>\n
Louise agrees: “It’s just the greatest buzz in the world. It’s ten times better than an actual holiday in Greece, and a billion times better than cleaning a grotty toilet. Just ask the Dolls – they’ve done both!”<\/p>\n
