{"id":1533,"date":"2010-06-24T16:01:50","date_gmt":"2010-06-24T15:01:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.whatsonni.com\/blog\/?p=1533"},"modified":"2010-06-24T16:01:50","modified_gmt":"2010-06-24T15:01:50","slug":"kids-take-one-giant-leap-into-libraries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2010\/06\/kids-take-one-giant-leap-into-libraries\/","title":{"rendered":"Kids take one giant leap into libraries!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Libraries Minister, Nelson McCausland, launched this year\u2019s Summer Reading Challenge, on behalf of Libraries NI, at Finaghy Library on Wednesday 23<sup>rd<\/sup> June, with a little help from the pupils of Finaghy Primary School.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whatsonni.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/FINAGHY-PS-Minister.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-1534\" title=\"FINAGHY PS  Minister\" src=\"http:\/\/www.whatsonni.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/FINAGHY-PS-Minister-1024x770.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"277\" \/><\/a>The Summer Reading Challenge takes place from Saturday 26<sup>th<\/sup> June \u2013 Saturday 4<sup>th<\/sup> September, and aims to keep children reading throughout the school summer holidays. This year\u2019s theme is \u2018Space Hop\u2019 which is designed to create a \u2018buzz\u2019 around reading and all Northern Ireland libraries are preparing to launch children\u2019s imaginations into orbit through this intergalactic book adventure.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Challenge is simple &#8211; Children are encouraged to read six or more books of their choice during the holidays with collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate or medal for every child who completes the Challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the launch, Minister McCausland said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Summer Reading Challenge continues to go from strength to strength every year. This exciting initiative not only encourages our children to read and enjoy books but also promotes quality time and interaction between parents, carers and children. Libraries play a vital role in the development of our children and I would encourage all parents and carers to bring their children along to their local library to take up this challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Summer Reading Challenge is an immensely popular and successful reading initiative. Now in its twelfth year, it is created by The Reading Agency, which is an independent charity working to inspire more people to read more.<\/p>\n<p>Libraries NI Chief Executive, Irene Knox explains:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearch shows that children really enjoy taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge, which is a great way to keep children entertained over the holidays.
