{"id":15863,"date":"2018-02-22T15:49:27","date_gmt":"2018-02-22T14:49:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/?p=15863"},"modified":"2018-02-22T15:49:27","modified_gmt":"2018-02-22T14:49:27","slug":"pack-yourself-off-to-the-belfast-arts-weekender","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2018\/02\/pack-yourself-off-to-the-belfast-arts-weekender\/","title":{"rendered":"Pack yourself off to the Belfast Arts Weekender"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Spring has sprung, and with it, comes the promise of two packed weekends of free cultural events in March, the Belfast Arts Weekender.<\/h1>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15864\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15864\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-15864\" src=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/press1-22-1024x748.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"292\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15864\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zoe Fox, Kabosh from Kabosh Theatre Company<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Thanks to funding and support from Belfast City Council, there\u2019s a range of events to experience spanning music, film, visual arts, theatre and urban art from 2-4 and 10-11 March &#8211; all free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Nuala McAllister said: \u201cWe decided to create this programme with our cultural partners to animate different corners of the city and to open up the arts to people who may not have considered<\/p>\n<p>them before, or who might find ticket prices a barrier. Belfast Arts Weekender is an amazing way to find out more about our great city \u2013 and to take a step out of our normal routines to enjoy something completely different.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s free, so you really have nothing to lose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Creative Exchange Studios\u2019 \u2018Lightning Talks\u2019 kicks off Belfast Arts Weekender at 6pm on Friday 2 March in The Engine Room Space, Portview Trade Centre, bringing together leading lights who are shaping east Belfast\u2019s growing cultural landscape for an evening of inspirational discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Across the city in the Duncairn Centre, north Belfast at 7:30pm, musician Conor Caldwell will d\u00e9but a specially commissioned piece of music \u2018Our City, Our Home\u2019, reflecting on growing up in the city and produced in collaboration with musicians from a range of cultures and musical backgrounds. An exhibition of photographs and video clips portraying life in Belfast, lectures, workshops and music sessions will also feature.<\/p>\n<p>The next day, Saturday, 3 March, there\u2019s an afternoon\u00a0celebration of urban arts from\u00a02-5pm at CS Lewis Square, entitled \u2018Eastside Wardrobe Jam.\u2019 Expect local and international street mural artists working live to transform \u2018previously loved\u2019 wardrobes and walls in the surrounding area, urban sports and dance displays by Thunder Action Sports, and music by Le Boom and Girl DJ Collective.<\/p>\n<p>And on Sunday, 4 March at the Cult\u00farlann on Falls Road, west Belfast, Aisling Gh\u00e9ar Theatre Company invites you to take an intimate glimpse into the fascinating world of the Fadgies &#8211; native Irish speakers from Omeath who settled and worked in Belfast\u2019s famous markets.<\/p>\n<p>The following weekend, the Ulster Orchestra presents U:O Interactive at the Indian Community Centre, north Belfast on Saturday, 10 March from 11am-3pm. For one unforgettable day, experience the orchestra as a living exhibition, try playing orchestral instruments under the expert guidance of professional musicians and you could even make music with your body.<\/p>\n<p>Or pop over to Conway Mill\u2019s Saturday market from 10am-3pm and immerse yourself in tales of the \u2018Millies\u2019 with Kabosh Theatre Company, actors including Gerard Jordan and Antoinette Morelli, historian Myrtle Hill and traditional musicians Jane Cassidy and Maurice Leyden \u2013 against a backdrop of amazing footage of the mill and its workers from the Northern Visions archive.<\/p>\n<p>Over on south Belfast\u2019s \u2018Golden Mile\u2019 on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 March from 12-4pm, enjoy curious tales during Accidental Theatre\u2019s \u2018SPOKE\u2019 mini mobile theatre festival.
