Following from the huge success of The Man Who Fell to Pieces,\nTinderbox Theatre Company returns to The MAC, 12 \u2013 23RD<\/sup> Feb, with\nthe political tour de force Ubu the King<\/em> inspired by Ubu Roi by Alfred\nJarry. Grotesque, gruesome and hilariously absurd, Ubu the King<\/em> is political, poignant and deeply resonates with today\u2019s\nGovernment and the ever-threatening political dictatorships that are currently\ncausing upheavals and uncertainty across the globe.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Alfred Jarry\u2019s Ubu Roi created a revolutionary stir in\nParis when it first premiered in 1906, sending shockwaves across Europe with\nits heavy parody on the Bourgeois Class and satirical view on the corruption of\npeople in power. Tinderbox\u2019s production will imaginatively transpose the\nclassic tale to a modern French Patisserie kitchen where Head Chef Ubu and his\nsous chef Ma Ubu wife cause chaos and tyranny with disastrous consequences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This hilarious production directed by Patrick J O\u2019Reilly\npromises to be a theatrical event of dance choreography, stunning visuals and\ndelicious multi-roling performances from five Northern Irish performers (see\ncast list). It will combine\nEuropean clown and physical caricature to create a viscerally powerful\nproduction that transposes an audience to performances full of trickery, comedy\nand high quality entertainment. The production is supported with original music\ncomposition by Katie Richardson and design by Ciaran Bagnall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am incredibly\nexcited to present the absurdist masterpiece Ubu the King by Alfred Jarry at\nThe MAC in February 2019. The show sparked riots when it first premiered in\nParis, due its unforgiving nature in revealing the brutality and\ngrotesquery evident in humanity. Given our current political and social\ncircumstances, such as Brexit and far-right extremist voices strengthening in\npower across the world, the absurdity so beautifully captured in Ubu the King\nunfortunately seems all too real in 2019.  Ubu the King by Alfred Jarry is\na fearless, anarchic and deeply moving piece of absurdist theatre, shining an\nunapologetic light on dictatorship regimes, far-right extremist views and the\ndark shadows of our history.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Damian Smyth, Head of Literature and Drama, Arts Council of Northern\nIreland, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
