{"id":17060,"date":"2019-02-08T11:34:36","date_gmt":"2019-02-08T10:34:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/?p=17060"},"modified":"2019-02-08T11:34:37","modified_gmt":"2019-02-08T10:34:37","slug":"fe-mcwilliam-gallery-hosts-major-new-exhibition-by-locky-morris","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2019\/02\/fe-mcwilliam-gallery-hosts-major-new-exhibition-by-locky-morris\/","title":{"rendered":"FE McWilliam Gallery hosts major new  exhibition by Locky Morris"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>Locky\nMorris: \u2018once a day, every day, all day long\u2019 opens on Feb 9 featuring a\nspecial exhibition talk by local artist Anne Tallentire<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/press2-2-1024x765.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17061\" width=\"512\" height=\"383\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A major free exhibition featuring the compelling,\nartistic works of renowned City of Derry artist Locky Morris will open at the\nFE McWilliam Gallery and Studio, Banbridge, on Saturday 9 February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognised across the UK, Ireland and\ninternationally for three decades of outstanding exhibitions featuring works\nthemed on Northern Ireland\u2019s troubled past, this new showcase features\ninspiring artistic works primarily made since 2010 and which reflect Morris\u2019\nmove towards more personal reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition \u2018once a day, every day, all day\nlong\u2019 was curated by Ulster University\u2019s Feargal O\u2019Malley and Dr Riann Coulter\nfrom FE McWilliam Gallery and references changes not only in Morris\u2019 own\npersonal circumstances but also in the now-transformed landscape of\npost-conflict Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Riann Coulter said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cLocky Morris makes original and compelling work\nand the themes that he explores in this exhibition will resonate with our\nregular visitors and attract new audiences to the gallery to enjoy our busy\nspring and summer programme.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition, which is accompanied by an\nillustrated catalogue with essays by Co. Armagh-born artist Anne Tallentire and\nBelfast based artist David Haughey, features photography, sculpture, sound and\ninstallation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cMorris is a master at finding beauty in the quotidian\ndetails of life and he has created quite unexpected and often humorous art out\nof his everyday experiences,\u201d<\/strong> Riann said. <strong>\u201cThis\ncombination of humour and attention to the surreal qualities of ordinary things\nunderlies his diverse practice and is the secret to the success of his\nInstagram account <em>especiallyeverything<\/em>.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThe playful titles that Morris uses for his art\nworks often have personal significance \u2013 o<em>nce a day, every day, all day long\n<\/em>is a chorus lyric from a song by respected American country singer, Connie\nSmith. Morris relates this phrase to the \u2018everydayness\u2019 of making art \u2013 music\nis an important element of Morris\u2019s work and life.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Locky Morris exhibited&nbsp;extensively from the\nmid-1980s both regionally and internationally. Recent exhibitions have included\na large-scale installation at IMMA, Dublin, as part of Eva International and a\nsolo show at the Naughton Gallery, Queens, Belfast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2026\/\/More<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Past solo projects include Golden Thread\nGallery, Belfast, Mother\u2019s Tankstation, Dublin, and Mannheimer Kunstverein,\nGermany.
