The Walled City Music Festival has announced\na stunning line-up of world-class musicians for this, its 10th<\/sup>\nanniversary, taking place from 7 to 10 March. The north-west\u2019s premier\nclassical music festival, which will take place in the Guildhall, the Great\nHall Magee and Cult\u00farlann U\u00ed Chan\u00e1in, will feature return appearances by some\nof the outstanding performers from the festival\u2019s first decade, including\nDimitry Sitkovetsky (violin), Kirill Troussov (violin), Sylvain Blassel (harp)\nand Jeffrey Zeigler (cello). Artistic Director of the festival,\nDerry-born Cathal Breslin, will\nperform in all four of the concerts, both as a soloist and with his Trio\nFestivale, which also features fellow Artistic Director Sabrina Hu (flute) and\nGerald Peregrine (cello). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the impressive concert\nseries, the festival will run an extensive outreach programme in primary\nschools throughout Derry and the surrounding area. These highly interactive\nworkshops will include a performance of a new commission by Joe Csibi based on\nthe tale of The Children of Lir, incorporating well-known excerpts from\nclassical and Irish music repertoire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nfestival\u2019s opening concert in Magee will herald the\nimminent arrival of spring with Beethoven\u2019s ever popular Spring Sonata, Spiegel\nim Spiegel by Estonian composer Arvo P\u00e4rt and masterpieces by Debussy and\nRavel. This is followed on Friday by a chamber recital in the Guildhall\nfocusing on the wild and romantic side of classical repertoire, with works by\nLiszt, Bart\u00f3k, Wagner and Sarasate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saturday\nsees a double-bill of UK premieres written in the past year. Ian Wilson\u2019s The\nGreat Hunger, commissioned for Trio Festivale, takes as its starting point the\nepic poem by Patrick Kavanagh and complements the exhibition of Great Hunger\nartworks running at Cult\u00farlann U\u00ed Chan\u00e1in. This concert also features Jeffrey\nZeigler, one of the world\u2019s foremost contemporary cellists and a former member\nof the renowned Kronos Quartet, who returns to the festival with a trio of\nworks from the cutting edge of New York\u2019s new music scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2019 Walled City Music Festival comes to a\nrousing conclusion with a return visit by the Ulster Orchestra, performing with\nthe festival\u2019s guest artists in an evening of overtures, concertos and solo\nworks, ranging from Mozart\u2019s Concerto for Flute and Harp to the richly romantic\nmusic of Tchaikovsky\u2019s Concertos for Violin and Piano. Conducted by the\norchestra\u2019s former Principal Conductor Dmitry Sitkovetsky, and showcasing some\nof classical music\u2019s most iconic repertoire, this concert promises an\nexperience to remember.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
