Themed <\/strong><em><strong>Voyage and Discovery <\/strong><\/em><strong>the programmefeatures the best of world-class theatre and new writings which explores the idea of place and a sense of discovery \u2013 whether it be within your \u2018self\u2019 or discovery of the world at large. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img src=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Untitled.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17412\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The season opens with Willy Russell\u2019s heart-warming comedy <em>Shirley Valentine <\/em>(31 Aug -5 Oct) directed\nby Patrick J O\u2019Reilly and starring Tara Lynne O\u2019Neill fresh from her appearance\nin the award winning Derry Girls.&nbsp;\nDescribed as &#8220;the funniest and most heart-warming play,\u201d follow Shirley\nas she takes a voyage of self- discovery to Greece.&nbsp; October welcomes <em>The Playboy of the Western World&nbsp;\n&nbsp;<\/em>(8 Oct-2 Nov) a co-production\nwith Dublin Theatre Festival directed by Oonagh Murphy, about life on the\nmargins and the lengths we go to, to create a reality more exciting than the\nplace we find ourselves. &nbsp;Both\nproductions will also tourto venues\nacross Ireland, including the Millennium Forum; The Market Place Theatre,\nArmagh; The Gaiety, Dublin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In association with Edinburgh\u2019s Traverse, the Lyric presents\nMeghan Tyler\u2019s extraordinary play, <em>Crocodile Fever <\/em>(03-08 Sep), a darkly comic and surreal\ntale of sisters taking on the dark forces around their farm to the soundtrack\nof 80s pop. <em>Crocodile Fever<\/em> was developed as part of the Lyric\u2019s highly\nsuccessful <em>New Playwright&#8217;s Programme. <\/em>&nbsp;The programme is now in its third year with a\nvibrant new team of young writers. Be the first to see their writing in\nprogress with the <em>New Playwrights\nShowcase <\/em>(31 Oct-02 Nov).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lyric is also delighted that their new writing entry\ninto A Play for Ireland, an initiative of Dublin\u2019s Fishamble Theatre Company,\nhas been chosen to be produced. <em>The&nbsp;Alternative<\/em>,\nby Michael Patrick and Ois\u00edn Kearney, is a rich black comedy that imagines an\nalternative history of Ireland. It will tour around five theatres throughout\nIreland before coming back home to the Lyric in the Autumn (08-13 Oct). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This Christmas you can enjoy the spirit of adventure and\ndiscover two wonderful new productions.&nbsp; <em>Peter\nPan<\/em> (29 Nov-04 Jan) which follows the young Darling family help free\nNeverland in Paul Boyd\u2019s new family musical.&nbsp;\nMeanwhile adult audiences will enjoy Grimes and McKee\u2019s <em>Driving Home\nfor Christmas <\/em>(19 Nov -04 Jan).\n&nbsp;A hilarious brand-new comedy about been\nstranded far from home during the festive season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lyric\u2019s voyage with <em>Blackout\n<\/em>continues into its 5<sup>th<\/sup> year<em>.<\/em>&nbsp; Through the Lyric\u2019s Creative Learning\ndepartment, this initiative educates young people about the consequences of\ncrimes and realities of prison life whilst also employing emerging actors and\nartists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With its continued aim to support local artists and\ncompanies the Lyric is thrilled to welcome a host of wonderful productions\nthroughout the season.&nbsp; Conor Grimes and\nKevin McAleer join forces as two vaudeville players travelling across the Great\nWestern Way as famine stalks the land in <em>SPUD!<\/em> (31 Aug -14 Sep). The\nbrilliant Nuala McKeever returns with a new one-woman play <em>How to be a Tube!<\/em>&nbsp;\n(18 -22 Sep).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also a jam-packed programme of visiting shows this\nsummer.&nbsp; Highlights include the return of the smash hit of last summer,\nthe musical version of Tony Macaulay\u2019s <em>Paperboy <\/em>(01-04 Aug)by the British Youth Music Theatre. Marie\nJones\u2019 exceptional <em>A Night in November<\/em> (12-21 Jun) by Sodabread production\nand John B Keane\u2019s tender and robust comedy of love <em>The Matchmaker <\/em>(04-06 Jul).&nbsp; Conor Mitchell\u2019s\nBelfast Ensemble continue their exciting experimental adventures in hi-fi\nstaging during their summer <em>BASH!<\/em>\n(28-30 Jun) and later in the year with <em>Abomination<\/em> (07-10 Nov) as part\nof the Outburst Festival.&nbsp; Geraldine Hughes returns with the Brassneck\nproduction of <em>Belfast Blues<\/em> (06-11 Aug) and to top it all off Sir Ian\nMcKellen will take to the Lyric stage as part of his sold out 80<sup>th<\/sup>\nbirthday tour, generously donating the proceeds to fundamental work of the Lyric\u2019s\nCreative Learning department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Executive Producer at\nLyric, <strong>Jimmy Fay<\/strong> said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\n<em>\u201cOur new season programme themed Voyage\nand Discovery invites audiences to join us on a journey to explore new works,\nsee familiar faces or join us on our tour across Ireland.
