{"id":17436,"date":"2019-06-07T11:41:20","date_gmt":"2019-06-07T10:41:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/?p=17436"},"modified":"2019-06-07T11:41:21","modified_gmt":"2019-06-07T10:41:21","slug":"social-inequality-in-northern-ireland-explored-in-new-critically-acclaimed-play-at-the-mac","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2019\/06\/social-inequality-in-northern-ireland-explored-in-new-critically-acclaimed-play-at-the-mac\/","title":{"rendered":"Social inequality in Northern Ireland explored in new,  critically acclaimed play at the MAC"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4>Fresh from a successful run at Edinburgh\nFringe and London theaters, hit play <strong>Killymuck<\/strong> will make its Northern\nIrish debut at the MAC on 13-14 June.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/press-1024x668.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17437\" width=\"512\" height=\"334\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A darkly comic, semi-autobiographical\nplay about class, poverty and the struggle to escape by award-winning\nplaywright, Kat Woods, the play centers on a fictitious housing estate in 1970s\nNorthern Ireland, Killymuck, and follows Niamh, a kid from the benefit class\nsystem played by Irish actress, Aoife Lennon, as she navigates the trials and\ntribulations of life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Directed by Cat Shoobridge (Recipient\nof the Genesis Future Director Award and Young Vic Associate Director), <strong>Killymuck<\/strong>\nhighlights the lack opportunity, educational barriers, impoverishment,\naddiction and depression present in cycles of poverty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having been longlisted for an Amnesty\nInternational Freedom of Expression award and shortlisted for the Filipa\nBraganca acting award, the play explores how those from deprived areas or with\nless access to money often have less opportunity in life and shines a light on\nhow social and psychological behaviours impact and shape who we become. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking about the show, Kat Woods said:\n\u201cThere is a forgotten segment of society that we never talk about when it comes\nto the arts &#8211; the lower classes. The underclass. The benefit class. I am from\nthat background and this piece is inspired by my own narrative. These stories\nneed to be told and need to find representation on stage. We are in danger of\ntheatre becoming an elitist domain. Let&#8217;s create theatre for all not just the\nfew.
