{"id":17510,"date":"2019-06-26T12:08:24","date_gmt":"2019-06-26T11:08:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/?p=17510"},"modified":"2019-06-26T12:08:24","modified_gmt":"2019-06-26T11:08:24","slug":"best-selling-authors-for-lunchtimes-at-hewitt-summer-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2019\/06\/best-selling-authors-for-lunchtimes-at-hewitt-summer-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Best Selling Authors for Lunchtimes at Hewitt Summer School"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Lunchtime Readings featuring prizewinning fiction writers who read from and talk about their recent work have been among the most popular events at recent John Hewitt International Summer Schools in Armagh, supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/press-8-1024x726.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17511\" width=\"512\" height=\"363\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And this year\u2019s Lunchtime series, which runs at The Market\nPlace Theatre in Armagh from 22 to 26 July, starting at a later time of 1.30pm\neach day, will feature more best-selling authors, including Ann Cleeves, Kevin\nBarry and Jo Baker in conversation with some of Northern Ireland\u2019s best-known\nwriters including Jan Carson, Michael Hughes and Brian McGilloway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The series begins on Monday 22 July with Sarah Moss,\none of the UK\u2019s very best contemporary novelists. Her highly acclaimed sixth\nnovel \u201cGhost Wall\u201d, was longlisted for the Women\u2019s Prize for Fiction 2019 and was\nchosen as a Book of the Year by The Guardian, The Sunday Times, Spectator &amp;\nFinancial Times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah will be in conversation with Michael Hughes, Co\nArmagh-born author of \u201cThe Countenance Divine\u201d and \u201cCountry\u201d which was\nannounced recently as the winner of the 2019 London Hellenic Prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ann Cleeves is the author behind ITV&#8217;s \u201cVera\u201d\nand BBC One&#8217;s \u201cShetland\u201d. She is the creator of detectives Vera Stanhope and\nJimmy Perez: both the Vera Stanhope and Shetland series of novels have become\nmajor TV adaptations. Her latest book, \u201cWild Fire\u201d, is the eighth and final\nbook in the Shetland series. Her next book is the Long Call, the first in a\nbrand new series of books featuring Detective Matthew Venn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday 23 July, during her\nconversation with Brian McGilloway, himself, one of Ireland\u2019s best-known crime\nwriters, local audiences will have a very special opportunity to listen to Anne\nCleeves talk about her extraordinary career in crime fiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi\nis a Ugandan novelist and short story writer. Her first novel, \u201cKintu\u201d, won the\nKwani Manuscript Project 2013, She was awarded the 2014 Commonwealth Short\nStory Prize for her story \u201cLet&#8217;s Tell This Story Properly\u201d and Jennifer was a\nrecipient of the prestigious Windham-Campbell Literature Prize in 2018. On Wednesday\n24 July, Jennifer will be in conversation about her first full story\ncollection. \u201cManchester Happened\u201d, with Maureen Boyle, prizewinning poet,\nmemoirist and teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There will be a\nwelcome return to JHISS on Thursday 25 July for Kevin Barry\u2019s,\none of Ireland\u2019s most exciting and entertaining writers today, who will be\ntalking about his darkly comic new novel, \u201cNight Boat to Tangier\u201d, to novelist\nJan Carson, critically acclaimed author of the 2019 EU prize-winning novel, \u201cThe\nFire Starters\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Kevin Barry\u2019s debut\nnovel, \u201cCity of Bohane\u201d, won the IMPAC award as well as the EU Prize for\nLiterature, and was shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award; his second\nnovel, \u201cBeatlebone\u201d, won the Goldsmiths Prize.
