{"id":17860,"date":"2019-09-11T21:36:03","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T20:36:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/?p=17860"},"modified":"2019-09-11T21:36:03","modified_gmt":"2019-09-11T20:36:03","slug":"biggest-q-con-ever-attracts-more-than-7000-visitors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2019\/09\/biggest-q-con-ever-attracts-more-than-7000-visitors\/","title":{"rendered":"Biggest Q-Con Ever Attracts More Than 7,000 Visitors"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The UK and Ireland\u2019s premier gaming and anime convention, Q-Con, celebrated its 26<sup>th<\/sup> year with a record number of visitors to the Queen\u2019s campus, including loads of successful events for all ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 7,000 people attended over the August Bank Holiday weekend, an increase of 10% on the 2018 event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hosted by QUB Dragonslayers, Q-Con included a host of events, including an appearance from the creator of the classic game \u2018Doom\u2019, John Romero, who challenged people \u201cto beat him at his own game\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince we began in a few rooms at Queen\u2019s and 150 people, Q-Con has exploded in popularity and excitement&#8230;\u201d said Ben Harrison. \u201cWe are delighted to see so many enjoy the weekend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Q-Con-16-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17862\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter this year\u2019s success we promise we&#8217;re working hard to make sure that 2020 will be even better!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the many successes for 2019 were the family events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe family tickets proved really popular,\u201d said Ben. \u201cWe worked hard to make sure that families and people of all ages interested in anime and gaming had events they could enjoy and take part in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designed by gaming and anime fans Q-Con attracts people from across the UK and Ireland and further afield, with last year seeing a five percent increase in attendees from other countries. People from all ages are present throughout the weekend, with Sunday having extra events for families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Q-Con-20-1024x1022.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17863\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With BBC airing a special on cosplay as part of its True North Series (10<sup>th<\/sup> September), Q-Con also saw several events showcasing the talent of fans and designer making and wearing the costumes of their favourite games, anime, TV and film characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe saw so many people around the university district coming in on trains, buses and in cars dressed up as their favourite characters showing just how popular gaming and anime has become, and how Q-Con caters for a demographic so often missed by the mainstream media,\u201d added Ben. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking place across the Queen\u2019s campus, including the Whitla Hall, Elmwood Hall, Queen\u2019s Film Theatre, the Computer Science Building and many other venues, planning for 2020 is already underway<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UK and Ireland\u2019s premier gaming and anime convention, Q-Con, celebrated its 26th year with a record number of visitors to the Queen\u2019s campus, including loads of successful events for all ages.
