{"id":18115,"date":"2019-11-27T17:50:02","date_gmt":"2019-11-27T16:50:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/?p=18115"},"modified":"2019-11-27T17:50:02","modified_gmt":"2019-11-27T16:50:02","slug":"members-of-the-public-urged-to-get-involved-with-the-great-nurdle-hunt-across-causeway-coast-and-glens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2019\/11\/members-of-the-public-urged-to-get-involved-with-the-great-nurdle-hunt-across-causeway-coast-and-glens\/","title":{"rendered":"Members of the public urged to get involved with \u2018The Great Nurdle Hunt\u2019 across Causeway Coast and Glens"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has joined forces with Fidra, a Scottish based environmental group, to launch \u2018The Great Nurdle Hunt\u2019 around our iconic beaches and coastline.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-circle-mask\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/press-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18116\" width=\"512\" height=\"342\"\/><figcaption> The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Councillor Sean Bateson, pictured at Ballycastle Beach with Environmental Resources Officer Janice Dunlop, is calling on members of the public to take part in \u2018The Great Nurdle Hunt\u2019 around our iconic beaches and coastline as part of the Council\u2019s #LitterSmart initiative. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Fidra shines a light on environmental\nissues, working with the public, industry and governments to deliver pragmatic,\nevidence-based solutions for a healthy environment and sustainable societies.\nFidra developed The Great Nurdle Hunt, a citizen science project to encourage\npeople in coastal areas to look for and record \u2018nurdles\u2019.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nurdles\nare small plastic pellets which, when melted together, are used by industry to\nmake nearly all our plastic products.&nbsp; They end up in the ocean, dispersed\nby currents and wind and are washed up on beaches across the globe.&nbsp; We\nwant to see if they are present on our coastline and then record the\ninformation as part of a global citizen science project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nurdles\nattract other pollutants and can be mistaken for food by sea birds and other\nmarine animals.&nbsp; One fulmar found in the North Sea had 273 nurdles in its\nstomach!&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nMayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Councillor Sean Bateson said:\n\u201cIt\u2019s really important we build up a picture of nurdles along our coastline as\npart of our other ongoing litter activity under our LitterSmart banner.&nbsp; We\nare excited to be part of the worldwide&nbsp;Nurdle Hunt movement and are\ngrateful for the opportunity to work alongside Fidra on this initiative.&nbsp;\nPlastics have a significant impact on the overall health of our marine and\ncoastal environments and there are a host of opportunities for everyone to get\ninvolved in making this place we call home better.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jasper\nHamlet from Fidra commented: \u2018We are delighted to have the support of Causeway\nCoast and Glens Borough Council and hope that many people can take part in The\nGreat Nurdle Hunt along this beautiful part of the Northern Irish coastline.\nTaking part in The Great Nurdle Hunt is fun, easy and contributes vital data to\nour worldwide picture of nurdle pollution. All you need to do is head to a\nbeach, look for nurdles and let us know how you get on by submitting your data\non our website.
