{"id":18311,"date":"2020-02-12T20:52:14","date_gmt":"2020-02-12T19:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/?p=18311"},"modified":"2020-02-12T20:52:14","modified_gmt":"2020-02-12T19:52:14","slug":"go-back-to-your-roots-and-discover-your-ancestors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2020\/02\/go-back-to-your-roots-and-discover-your-ancestors\/","title":{"rendered":"Go back to your Roots and discover your Ancestors."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Have you ever thought about tracing your family tree and discovering more about local history, but aren\u2019t sure where to begin? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/press-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18312\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council are delighted to be joining forces once again with Lough Neagh Partnership and the Ulster Historical Society to bring you a free four week course, <em>Family Home and Place<\/em> beginning Monday 24 February which will help you gain some of the tools and resources for researching your family and local history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Facilitated&nbsp;by Dr William\nRoulston, Research Director, Ulster Historical Foundation, you will cover\nexciting research during these informal classes including Maps; Archives; Census\nreturns; Civil records of births, deaths and marriages; Church records; Valuation\nrecords \u2013 Griffith\u2019s Valuation; Tithe Valuation; Valuation revision books; Landed\nestate papers; Wills and testamentary papers and School records. This course\nwill conclude with a visit to the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr William Roulston holds a PhD in\nArchaeology from Queen&#8217;s University Belfast and has written a number of books,\nincluding&nbsp;Fermanagh: History and Society&nbsp;(edited with Eileen Murphy,\nDublin, 2004),&nbsp;Researching Scots-Irish Ancestors&nbsp;(Belfast,\n2005),&nbsp;Restoration Strabane, 1660-1714&nbsp;(Dublin, 2007),&nbsp;Three\ncenturies of life in a Tyrone parish: a history of Donagheady from 1600 to\n1900&nbsp;(Strabane, 2010) and&nbsp;Abercorn: The Hamilton\u2019s of Barons\nCourt&nbsp;(Belfast, 2014).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Come along and join us at The Gateway,\nour stunning new venue on the banks of Antrim Lough Shore Park on Monday 24\nFebruary from 7.30pm and find out more about your blood line and the home-grown\nhistory of Antrim and beyond.
