{"id":18373,"date":"2020-02-27T15:08:57","date_gmt":"2020-02-27T14:08:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/?p=18373"},"modified":"2020-02-28T10:44:01","modified_gmt":"2020-02-28T09:44:01","slug":"world-premiere-of-new-music-about-derry-civil-rights-movement-to-be-performed-in-the-glassworks-on-7-march","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2020\/02\/world-premiere-of-new-music-about-derry-civil-rights-movement-to-be-performed-in-the-glassworks-on-7-march\/","title":{"rendered":"World premiere of new music about Derry civil rights movement to be performed in The Glassworks on 7 March"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The Walled City Music Festival is just around the corner and as part of this year\u2019s event a major new piece has been commissioned by the Festival, with support from Arts Council Northern Ireland, from Derry-born composer Christopher Norby. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/press-9-681x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18378\" width=\"341\" height=\"512\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The piece is entitled \u2018Some Day: A Piece about Civil Rights\u2019 and will be premiered in The Glassworks on Saturday 7 March by international chamber ensemble Trio Festivale (Sabrina Hu, flute; Gerald Peregrine, cello: Cathal Breslin, piano).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Some Day\u2019 presents civil rights movements as an\nongoing struggle for equity over time. Within this larger context is the story\nof the civil rights movement in Derry &#8211; the precursor to it, how it was\ninfluenced by movements in the Southern States of the USA, and how it was\neventually overshadowed by a violent Nationalist struggle. The piece also\nexamines the changing role of communications in the modern world &#8211; from\nconnecting people in the past to its capacity to divide, polarize and influence\npolitical discourse in the present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the music, the performance of\n\u2018Some Day\u2019 will featurea film montage of incredible photography and footage\nfrom iconic figures such as Eamon Melaugh and Barney McMonagle in Derry, Spider\nMartin in Selma, Alabama, and contemporary TV footage from local news\njournalist Leona O\u2019Neill. All of these historic materials have been crafted by\nmotion designer and illustrator Michael Boddy into a visual accompaniment to\nthe newly-composed music that will be shown in The Glassworks on 7 March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matthew Greenall, Executive Director of Walled\nCity Music, commented \u201cCommissioning has&nbsp;become a regular feature of\nWalled City Music Festival&#8217;s&nbsp;programme&nbsp;in recent&nbsp;years, and we\nare delighted to present Some Day, our most ambitious&nbsp;commission to date.\nChris Norby has revisited and made fresh the live issue of civil rights in our\nsociety, and his striking&nbsp;new work will encapsulate both the ongoing\nimportance&nbsp;of civil&nbsp;rights and the relevance of contemporary&nbsp;art\nworks to that&nbsp;struggle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tickets are now available for all concerts via\nthe Millennium Forum Box Office or online at&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.millenniumforum.co.uk\/\">www.millenniumforum.co.uk<\/a>.
