{"id":19209,"date":"2021-04-01T16:46:49","date_gmt":"2021-04-01T15:46:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/?p=19209"},"modified":"2021-04-01T16:46:49","modified_gmt":"2021-04-01T15:46:49","slug":"new-council-commitments-for-our-deaf-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2021\/04\/new-council-commitments-for-our-deaf-community\/","title":{"rendered":"New Council commitments for our Deaf Community"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>F<strong>ollowing a motion which was proposed by Councillor Mark Cooper and seconded by Councillor Julie Gilmour, the Council has committed to enhancing services, signing on social media videos and the appointment of a \u2018Deaf Champion\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/press-808x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19210\" width=\"404\" height=\"512\"\/><figcaption>Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Cllr Jim Montgomery.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The motion read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThat this Council commits to being a Deaf Friendly Council, undertakes to<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>ensure all council services are accessible to those who are Deaf, commits to<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>providing signing on social media videos to highlight important events and<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>announcements within the Council area, promotes the introduction of Sign<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Courses for staff, appoints a \u201cDeaf Champion\u201d within the Council and commits<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>to working with neighbouring Councils and Deaf organisations to promote Deaf<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>awareness. Commits to signing up to the BDA\u2019s, BSL\/ISL Charter to improve<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>access and rights for Deaf people who use sign language.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Jim Montgomery said; \u201cEquality of access to services is a hugely important issue for our Council. We have made really positive progress, but we must continue to recognise and remove any barriers that prevent those with a disability from enjoying our Borough as an outstanding place to live, work and enjoy.
