{"id":19409,"date":"2021-06-10T16:26:04","date_gmt":"2021-06-10T15:26:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/?p=19409"},"modified":"2021-06-10T16:26:04","modified_gmt":"2021-06-10T15:26:04","slug":"st-john-ambulance-999-defibrillator-fund-walk-underway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2021\/06\/st-john-ambulance-999-defibrillator-fund-walk-underway\/","title":{"rendered":"St John Ambulance 999 Defibrillator Fund Walk Underway"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/unnamed-3-scaled.jpg\"><img src=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/unnamed-3-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19410\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Janine Spence, Emma Norris, Grace Geary, Hannah Smyth, Samuel Bell, Daniel Maguire, Rachel Caines<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Volunteers from St John Ambulance are walking and running 999km throughout June in a monumental feat, to raise funds to replace the organisation\u2019s life-saving defibrillators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With more than 150km already completed, volunteers from St John Ambulance Head Quarters Transport Division have dedicated yet more of their time and take on the challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interim Unit Manager Neil Fusco of St John Ambulance explained that their four emergency frontline ambulances and rapid response vehicle are all vital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese vehicles are all equipped to the same standard as the statutory ambulance service,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSadly, their defibrillators are coming to the end of life and the division needs to buy new ones. Each defibrillator costs around \u00a31,500 and five are needed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the walk underway Neil said it is an extreme challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTrust us, after chatting to some of the volunteers we can concur that their challenge to walk 999km is no easy feat to achieve,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat is more than 620 miles, but all are willing, even if there may be some blisters to treat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>St John Ambulance Head Quarters Transport Division based in Carryduff is a well-recognised sight at events like the Ulster Rugby and out and about supporting the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDuring the Covid crisis the St John volunteers stepped forward to assist in many ways including responding to calls for Emergency Ambulance Control and transporting Covid positive patients, explained Neil.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince the pandemic began the division has assisted NIAS on over 162 shifts, attending to 427 patients, covering 10,799 miles, over 1,082 hours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help keep each vehicle at the standard required they will need to replace the equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAny donation, no matter how small, will help the unit to buy these new life-saving defibrillators,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery donation, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you\u2019d like to know more or donate, please visit the division\u2019s fundraising page at&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/excaliburpress.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b56cc151b899ee73528141b05&amp;id=9ff07acb88&amp;e=8d7b2525d9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/bit.ly\/2T1oFto<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For more information on the vital work that St John Ambulance undertakes visit&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/excaliburpress.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b56cc151b899ee73528141b05&amp;id=bbca02bef3&amp;e=8d7b2525d9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/sjani.org<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Volunteers from St John Ambulance are walking and running 999km throughout June in a monumental feat, to raise funds to replace the organisation\u2019s life-saving defibrillators.
