{"id":21898,"date":"2023-10-05T14:57:29","date_gmt":"2023-10-05T13:57:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/?p=21898"},"modified":"2023-10-05T14:57:29","modified_gmt":"2023-10-05T13:57:29","slug":"belfast-engineering-firm-pac-group-to-supply-innovative-preformer-for-airborne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2023\/10\/belfast-engineering-firm-pac-group-to-supply-innovative-preformer-for-airborne\/","title":{"rendered":"Belfast Engineering Firm PAC Group To Supply Innovative Preformer For Airborne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/PAC-FIA-Airborne_0579-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-21899\" src=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/PAC-FIA-Airborne_0579-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Belfast-based engineering and manufacturing firm PAC Group have been selected by Airborne to supply their innovative hot drape performer technology to an ambitious new aerospace project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The cell being procured by UK aerospace company GKN Aerospace is a collaboration between leading engineering and manufacturing companies, with the aim of providing a fully automated preforming line to the Global Technology Centre in Bristol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Airborne are supplying the cell, integrating systems provided by PAC Group and the other companies involved in the project Accudyne and Assyst Bullmer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The system will comprise of sub-systems developed by each manufacturer, and will set out to fulfil the aims of the UK industry consortium project ASCEND.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ASCEND (Aerospace and Automotive Supply Chain Enabled Development), with lead partner GKN Aerospace, aims to usher in the next generation of energy-efficient aircraft through the acceleration of composite materials and process technologies. Valued at \u00a340 million, ASCEND has been made possible through a \u00a320 million investment from the industry, and a commitment of \u00a319.6 million by the UK government funded by the ATI Programme (a partnership between Department for Business and Trade, Aerospace Technology Institute, and Innovate UK).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;We are delighted to be working with Joe Summers and the team at Airborne.\u201d said Darren Leslie, Business Development Director at PAC Group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s an honour to be able to contribute to this ambitious project, and we\u2019re excited to be able to provide our innovative technology. In doing so, the ASCEND project will help to secure the UK\u2019s position as a technology leader in future lightweight structures for sustainable aircraft and mobility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe\u2019re proud of the sustainable nature of this project,\u201d said Mr Leslie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt will contribute to the reduction of the industry\u2019s carbon footprint and energy consumptions, whilst ushering in a new age of energy-efficient aircraft and future mobility.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Joe Summers, Managing Director at Airborne, commented on PAC\u2019s involvement in the project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;PAC Group&#8217;s technology and hardware is exactly what we need to complement our Automated Ply Placement system to produce the 2D stacks,\u201d said Mr Summers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe are looking forward to working with the team at PAC Composites in order to offer a flexible automation solution and workflow automation, enabling a higher rate of the manufacturing of composite structures.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PAC Group\u2019s hot drape preformer forms an essential part of the Automated Preforming Cell. The Automated Preforming Cell transforms broad goods, including non-crimp fabrics or woven materials, in 3D preforms usable with Resin Transfer Molding (RTM). PAC Group\u2019s preformer forms an essential part of the system, and will 3D form the preforms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PAC Group\u2019s preformer &#8211; also known as a Hot Drape Former &#8211; has been recognised and commended for its innovative nature. In 2021, PAC Group was awarded the Queen\u2019s Award for Innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAs the leading specialist in the design and manufacture of Hot Drape Forming machines, we\u2019re thrilled that we can bring our innovative technology to this industry-wide collaborative project,\u201d said Gavin Rankin, Technical Director at PAC Group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEach of our preformers are manufactured to the highest standards.
