{"id":22123,"date":"2023-11-21T17:45:01","date_gmt":"2023-11-21T16:45:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/?p=22123"},"modified":"2023-11-21T17:45:46","modified_gmt":"2023-11-21T16:45:46","slug":"get-freezin-for-a-reason-in-portrush-this-december-in-support-of-special-olympics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2023\/11\/get-freezin-for-a-reason-in-portrush-this-december-in-support-of-special-olympics\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cGet Freezin\u2019 For A Reason\u201d in Portrush this December in support of Special Olympics\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council is delighted to partner with both PSNI and the Policing and Community Safety Partnership for this year\u2019s \u2018Polar Plunge\u2019 in support of Special Olympics<strong>. <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>The annual event, being held in Portrush, will help raise much needed funds which will help sports, leadership, and health programmes to be delivered to Special Olympics Ireland athletes in clubs across Northern Ireland.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22125\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22125\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-22125\" src=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/1-8-743x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"620\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22125\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">EPSON MFP image<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Special Olympics Ireland in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.specialolympics.ie\/law-enforcement-torch-run\">The Law Enforcement Torch Run<\/a> officially launched the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Annual Polar Plunge, proudly supported by Gala Retail and this exciting fundraising campaign will see people from across the island \u201ctake the plunge\u201d to support Special Olympics Ireland\u2019s athletes and programmes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Councillor Steven Callaghan said:<\/strong> \u201cAs event partners alongside the PSNI and the Policing and Community Safety Partnership, Council is delighted to support this year\u2019s Polar Plunge event and welcome it to Portrush.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis annual event, now in its 21<sup>st<\/sup> year, provides valuable support for Special Olympics Ireland athletes, many of whom are from the Borough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d encourage you to come along on the day to show your support all those participating, good luck to everyone who takes the plunge this December to help raise valuable funding for these key sporting programmes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now in its 21<sup>st<\/sup> year, Polar Plunge events will take place in five locations across the island throughout December 2023.<\/p>\n<p>In Northern Ireland, people can take the icy dip at Portrush, Co. Antrim on Sunday December 3<sup>rd<\/sup>. The challenge of getting \u2018Freezin\u2019 for a Reason\u2019 is all the more apt this year as we prepare for the Ireland Winter Games in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor all of us involved in Special Olympics, the grassroots and everyday activities at local club level are the most important. It is so important that people with an intellectual disability have an outlet through sport, an outlet to meet friends, train hard and compete, with support from the local community and club volunteers.
