{"id":2905,"date":"2011-05-04T16:24:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-04T15:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.whatsonni.com\/blog\/?p=2905"},"modified":"2011-05-04T16:24:00","modified_gmt":"2011-05-04T15:24:00","slug":"irish-trad-legends-support-derry-fleadh-cheoil-bid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2011\/05\/irish-trad-legends-support-derry-fleadh-cheoil-bid\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish Trad legends support Derry Fleadh Cheoil bid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Irish Traditional music royalty, including Clannad&#8217;s Moya Brennan and Mairead N\u00ed Mhaonnaigh from Altan, visited Derry last week to lend their support to the \u201cBring the Fleadh to Derry\u201d campaign, prior to their sell out show at Derry\u2019s award winning\u00a0<em>Cult\u00farlann<\/em> U\u00ed Chan\u00e1in.<\/p>\n<p>Moya Brennan, formerly with the Donegal based band Clannad, Mairead\u00a0N\u00ed Mhaonnaigh, one of Ireland\u2019s leading fiddle players and the lead vocalist for the Irish super group Altan,\u00a0and\u00a0Triona N\u00ed Dhomhnail and Maighr\u00e9ad N\u00ed Dhomhnail, both of whom performed with the highly respected\u00a0Skara Brae, took part in a photo shoot to celebrate and promote Derry\u2019s bid for the Fleadh\u00a0Cheoil\u00a0na\u00a0h\u00c9ireann in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at before the gig\u00a0Mairead\u00a0N\u00ed Mhaonnaigh commented \u201cThis is great news for Derry and I wish the bid well, if we can do anything to assist the bid we will all be delighted to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Bring the Fleadh to Derry campaign is going from strength to strength at the present time, with the passing of each month heralding more support from around the island of Ireland for this major event to be held in Derry. If successful the event would bring in over \u00a330 million to the local\u00a0economy\u00a0and attract over 250,000 visitors over a 7 day period.<\/p>\n<p>The awarding body for Fleadh Cheoil,\u00a0Comhaltas Ceolt\u00f3ir\u00ed\u00a0\u00c9ireann, recently held their Annual Congress meeting in Tullamore, where the Derry bid was discussed and received recognition within the prestigious Congress Annual Report. The report highlighted the strength of its current campaign and the strong political support coming from the First Minister Peter Robinson and the Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness.
