{"id":3071,"date":"2011-07-17T10:20:17","date_gmt":"2011-07-17T09:20:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.whatsonni.com\/blog\/?p=3071"},"modified":"2011-07-17T10:20:17","modified_gmt":"2011-07-17T09:20:17","slug":"it%e2%80%99s-%e2%80%98t-day%e2%80%99-for-the-ulster-orchestra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2011\/07\/it%e2%80%99s-%e2%80%98t-day%e2%80%99-for-the-ulster-orchestra\/","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s \u2018T-Day\u2019 for the Ulster Orchestra!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With a choice of 35 main season concerts &#8211; including a world premi\u00e8re &#8211; and nine lunchtime concerts that feature the work of more than 60 composers from 12 countries from around the world involving more than 20 guest conductors and almost 40 soloists<strong> \u2013 It\u2019s \u2018T-Day\u2019 for the Ulster Orchestra\u2019s as tickets to the 2011-2012 Concert Season go on sale today (18 July).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whatsonni.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/ulster-orchestra-tickets1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3073\" title=\"ulster orchestra tickets\" src=\"http:\/\/www.whatsonni.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/ulster-orchestra-tickets1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"395\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a>Entitled <em>\u2018World of Music&#8217;<\/em>, the Ulster Orchestra\u2019s 46th Season heralds some great classical music and unique contemporary collaborations with some outstanding local and international artists and a first for Northern Ireland&#8217;s only professional symphony orchestra in its <em>Taster Concert<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <em>Taster Concert<\/em> on 21 September is a first for the UO,\u201d explained the Ulster Orchestra\u2019s Chief Executive, \u201cas it will be the first time that we have given a concert that features music from the Season ahead. It\u2019s a potted highlight if you like and a perfect way to open the door into our world of classical music.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will also be the first time that JoAnn Falletta takes the Orchestra through its paces in her first Season as our new Principal Conductor. Conducting and presenting the concert, JoAnn comes with a huge international reputation. Described by the <em>New York Times<\/em> as \u2018one of the finest conductors of her generation\u2019, she is our first female and first American to hold the post bringing passion and genuine presence to the stage,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UO is a cornerstone of Northern Ireland\u2019s diverse cultural life and this Season we want to continue to take people on a journey through a world of music that is rich and diverse and has the ability to draw people together from all walks of life, backgrounds and ages. It\u2019s going to be a not-to-be-missed Season,\u201d Declan said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The acclaimed British pianist, Paul Lewis, opens the Season &#8211; which runs from September to June &#8211; in the Belfast Waterfront on 23 September. The Season also marks a welcome return for a number of local soloists of international standing like Barry Douglas and Sir James Galway \u2013 who closes the Season with the James Galway Prom in June.<\/p>\n<p>The young Finish virtuoso violinist Pekka Kuusisto, who wowed the Ulster Hall last November is back in May, and one of last year\u2019s Classical Brit Award winners Jack Liebeck, plays Beethoven\u2019s Violin Concerto in a Beethoven-fest on 30 September.<\/p>\n<p>The popular Russian pianist Nikolai Demidenko also makes a welcome return as does the chart-topping Australian-born classical guitarist, Craig Ogden, who plays Rodrigo\u2019s well known <em>Concierto de Aranjuez<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Tasmin Little, winner of the Critics Award at this May\u2019s Classic Brits for her interpretation of Elgar\u2019s Violin Concerto and a favourite with Belfast audiences, will perform the piece in the Ulster Hall on 21 October.<\/p>\n<p>The UO also marks the Titanic Centenary with \u2018The stars, the seas\u2019, a specially commissioned piece by the Orchestra\u2019s Associate Composer Ian Wilson.
