{"id":4366,"date":"2012-04-30T15:52:26","date_gmt":"2012-04-30T14:52:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.whatsonni.com\/news\/?p=4366"},"modified":"2012-05-01T11:28:34","modified_gmt":"2012-05-01T10:28:34","slug":"ulsters-strongest-men-go-head-to-head-for-the-coveted-culcullen-warrior-prince-trophy1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2012\/04\/ulsters-strongest-men-go-head-to-head-for-the-coveted-culcullen-warrior-prince-trophy1\/","title":{"rendered":"Ulster&#8217;s Strongest Men go head to head for the coveted Culcullen Warrior Prince Trophy!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>A total of 16 competitors have qualified to compete in the Ulster Strongest Man Competition to be held in Cookstown on Bank Holiday Monday 7<sup>th<\/sup> May from 12 noon to 5pm. <\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><strong>The event, organised by Cookstown District Council and sponsored by Signworks is set to be a thrilling spectacle with competitors going head to head in six spectacular challenges.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Ulster's Strongest Man\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cookstown.gov.uk\/media\/Strongman_Launch_2012.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"366\" \/>The Ulster\u2019s Strongest Man event is only one part of the fun filled day. Children will be entertained on the main street with an array of activities from kiddie\u2019s amusement rides, free magic shows, balloon modeling and face painters.\u00a0 In addition to last year\u2019s set up, <strong>Grandstand tiered seating<\/strong> will be located on both sides of the arena. \u00a0\u00a0<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Challenges 2012<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1: Earth Mover &#8211; Tyre Super Yoke <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A two laned event with a huge 850lbs structure being carried on each competitors shoulder over a set course of 20 metres. A Jurassic earth stumping event to start of the competition.\u00a0 Fastest time or distance taken wins.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2: St Patrick\u2019s Trail Carry <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A huge Celtic Cross weighing in excess of 200kg will be picked up in the arms of the competitor and carried for a far as possible up a 20 metre set course.\u00a0 A real lung busting event were not only strength but fitness is the key. Furthest distance wins.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3: The Apollo Axle Wheel Deadlift <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the most famous weightlifting axle in the world, with a thick 2 inch bar making it difficult to hold.\u00a0 Louis Cyr, the famous French Canadian Circus Performer lifted this mighty axle above his head.\u00a0 In our competition it will be a deadlift from the ground.\u00a0 This not only involves back strength but also pinch grip to lift the bar. \u00a0Maximum lift wins.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4: The Hercules Hold <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is one of the most painful strongman tests.\u00a0 A competitor must lift a car on a frame off the ground for as long as possible.\u00a0 Pain and guts are part of this event, the strongest grip around will be the winner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5: Beaghmore Atlas Stone Lift <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Five stones weighing from 85kg to a massive 145kg will be lifted onto a wall of varied heights.\u00a0 This will be the toughest of all the strength events.\u00a0 Stone lifting is the oldest strength test known to strongman, an overall body challenge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6: The Olympic Strongman Medley <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Competitors will go head to head in this event were a series of block lifts and presses need to be completed.\u00a0 Competitors will first lift a 110kg axle push above their heads.\u00a0 They will then pull a 200kg block on to an 18\u201d platform.\u00a0\u00a0 Competitors will move on the second platform and push a 64kg dumbbell above their heads and then pull a 225kg block onto an 18\u201d high platform.\u00a0 The final task of the grueling challenge will be to lift a 130kg log and push it above their head and then lift a massive 250kg block onto the 18\u201dplatform.\u00a0 Fastest time wins.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is the finale event of 6 grueling events and it will test every sinew of the competitors body, only the strong will survive and the weak will falter.\u00a0 The strongest will be crowned Ulster\u2019s Strongest Man 2012 and receive the coveted Culcullen Warrior Prince Trophy.
