(1)\" src=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Kate-Guelke-Education-Officer-at-the-Millennium-Forum-measures-up-the-Gormley-Statue-for-a-new-shirt-1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kate Guelke, Education Officer at the Millennium Forum, measures up the Gormley Statue for a new shirt! <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From\u00a0<strong>Thursday the 28<sup>th<\/sup> to Saturday the 30<sup>th<\/sup> of March<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong>empty unit on floor 2 of the Richmond Centre<\/strong> will be transformed into an artists\u2019 studio, a craft drop-in centre and a live museum reminiscent of \u201cThe Factory Girls\u201d in Frank McGuinness\u2019 famous play.\u00a0 A tribute to the enormous shirt-making factories of Derry-Londonderry\u2019s past,\u00a0<strong>\u2018The City Dream Factory\u2019 <\/strong>gives shoppers the unique chance to experience living history.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>DAY ONE \u2013 Thursday, 28<sup>th<\/sup> March between 12pm and 5pm<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Artist Rita Duffy will host a five hour\u00a0<strong>\u2018Artists\u2019 Studio\u2019 <\/strong>and \u2013 with help from shoppers, as well as her studio associates \u2013 will create a large-scale arts project.\u00a0 As with her \u2018Laundry Day\u2019 exhibition, this artwork will relate specifically to shirt-making.<\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>DAY TWO \u2013 Friday, 29<sup>th<\/sup> March between 12pm and 5pm<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Bluebell Arts Centre\u2019s Maeve Gallagher will host a five hour\u00a0<strong>\u2018Craft Drop-in Centre\u2019 <\/strong>where shoppers can come in, sit down and learn how to sew and make their own lavender bags in a matter of minutes.\u00a0 Whilst shoppers work on these, more experienced sewers will make several lively garments for the Antony Gormley statue situated outside the Millennium Forum.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>DAY THREE \u2013 Saturday, 30<sup>th<\/sup> March between 12pm and 5pm<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Four ex-factory girls of the 60s and 70s will discuss their experiences whilst making shirts on old sewing machines for five hours. Every twenty minutes these \u2018Top Women\u2019 tell an audience of passers-by their stories as part of\u00a0<strong>\u2018The City Dream Factory\u2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Through-out the three days, 70s-style \u2018Factory Girls\u2019 in curlers will serve vintage refreshments sourced from Brid McCartney\u2019s Donegal restaurant The Corncrake.<\/p>\n<p>Kate Guelke, Education and Outreach Officer at the Millennium Forum, said \u201cWe\u2019re delighted to be working in conjunction with the Richmond Centre and Art and Business NI to produce this quietly imaginative, interesting little project.\u00a0 We hope that shoppers will engage with the rich history of Derry-Londonderry\u2019s factory floors; through Rita Duffy\u2019s artwork, through Maeve Gallagher\u2019s craft circle, even through the Corncrake\u2019s traditional sweet treats!
