{"id":5664,"date":"2013-04-18T18:21:03","date_gmt":"2013-04-18T17:21:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.whatsonni.com\/news\/?p=5664"},"modified":"2013-04-18T18:21:03","modified_gmt":"2013-04-18T17:21:03","slug":"making-merry-at-holywood%e2%80%99s-may-day-celebrations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2013\/04\/making-merry-at-holywood%e2%80%99s-may-day-celebrations\/","title":{"rendered":"Making Merry at Holywood\u2019s May Day Celebrations"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>There\u2019s lots to see and do in Holywood on Monday 6<sup>th<\/sup> May, when the town will be transformed and filled with family fun for the annual May Day celebrations.<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/TDE-Conedancers-Duo-Flying-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5665\" title=\"TDE Conedancers Duo Flying (2)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/TDE-Conedancers-Duo-Flying-2-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a>The town, which boasts the only Maypole in Ireland, will be filled with over 70 stalls including an Italian Speciality market, children&#8217;s activities, street entertainment, and a diverse menu of music and dance, all adding up to a great day out for the whole family.<\/p>\n<p>Brand new entertainment includes a fantastic display from <strong><em>The Cone Dancers<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 a 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century Maypole<br \/>\neight metres high which creates a new stage for an extraordinary aerial performance \u2013 the illusion is gravity defying and extraordinary! It promises to be a truly modern day adaptation of maypole dancing.<\/p>\n<p>Music from <strong><em>The Brass Volcanoes<\/em><\/strong> will resound through the Town Centre \u2013 the jazz band consisting of brass, saxophones and drums are inspired by a long tradition of brass bands from New Orleans as well as other parts of the world: expect flavours of The Balkans, Latin America, The Caribbean and Kletzmer, all with their own London twist.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to this will be performances from <strong><em>The Divine Company<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 a stunning display of ribbon dances guaranteed to introduce a generous splash of colour and energy to the day.<\/p>\n<p>Holywood &amp; District Community Council have organised traditional favourites; Bonnie Baby Competition (10.30 am, Queen\u2019s Leisure Complex) and Fancy Dress Competition (12.30 pm \u2013 the themes this year are Merry May Day, Stars of Holywood &amp; As You Like It)<\/p>\n<p>The ever- popular Maypole Dancing will take place at 11am and 1pm.
