{"id":6452,"date":"2013-10-08T15:04:52","date_gmt":"2013-10-08T14:04:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.whatsonni.com\/news\/?p=6452"},"modified":"2013-10-08T15:04:52","modified_gmt":"2013-10-08T14:04:52","slug":"university-of-ulster-celebrates-community-achievement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2013\/10\/university-of-ulster-celebrates-community-achievement\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Ulster Celebrates Community Achievement"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The University of Ulster has celebrated the success of its flexible access programmes for young people and adults at an award ceremony on the Jordanstown campus.<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6453\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6453\" style=\"width: 448px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/UU-Community-Achievement.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6453\" title=\"UU Community Achievement\" src=\"http:\/\/www.whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/UU-Community-Achievement.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6453\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pictured at the Celebration of Community Achievement evening are (l to r) Professor Richard Barnett, University of Ulster Vice-Chancellor; PSNI Superintendent Michelle Larmour; Professor Anne Moran, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Educational Partnerships and International Affairs), University of Ulster; Finance Minister, Simon Hamilton, MLA and Professor Alastair Adair, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Development) and Provost (Jordanstown and Belfast), University of Ulster.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>More than 200 students were presented with certificates at the \u2018Celebration of Community Achievement\u2019 evening, which recognised each person\u2019s commitment, determination and creativity within their module or project.<\/p>\n<p>In conjunction with community partners, Ulster has developed a wide-ranging portfolio of flexible learning opportunities for adults, young people and those in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>Learning programmes such as Active Citizenship, Internet and Multimedia, Integration and Good Relations through Sport, Community Development and Social Networking were among the achievements noted at the awards ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>The University supported these programmes as part of its Widening Access and Participation Strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Finance Minister Simon Hamilton MLA praised the programmes and said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project has an extremely positive impact on the local communities in Northern Ireland. I congratulate all those who received an award this evening \u2013 their achievements will not only reap personal benefits, but make a significant and outstanding contribution to the communities in which they live.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis evening has been an opportunity to honour those that have and are continuing to make a difference in Northern Ireland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students were welcomed into the higher education community and encouraged to continue their lifelong learning journey by Ulster\u2019s Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard Barnett.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cOne of the University\u2019s corporate goals is to provide excellent, student-centred, flexible programmes of study which are accessible to all those who have the ability to benefit from them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWidening participation in higher education is a key priority, since it is vital in creating a fairer society, securing improvements in social mobility and supporting economic growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Special guests at the celebration included representatives from community, schools and voluntary organisations such as the Sport Changes Life Foundation and the PSNI, which supports education in local communities.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Ulster has celebrated the success of its flexible access programmes for young people and adults at an award ceremony on the Jordanstown campus.
