{"id":9931,"date":"2015-09-07T13:31:26","date_gmt":"2015-09-07T12:31:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/?p=9931"},"modified":"2015-09-07T13:31:26","modified_gmt":"2015-09-07T12:31:26","slug":"%e2%80%98back-to-the-future%e2%80%99-as-local-man-becomes-the-gobbins%e2%80%99-1000th-visitor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/2015\/09\/%e2%80%98back-to-the-future%e2%80%99-as-local-man-becomes-the-gobbins%e2%80%99-1000th-visitor\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018BACK TO THE FUTURE\u2019 AS LOCAL MAN BECOMES THE GOBBINS\u2019 1,000TH VISITOR"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>The Gobbins coastal cliff path walk is already celebrating a major milestone, welcoming its 1,000<sup>th<\/sup> visitor \u2013 appropriately a local man with close family connections over several centuries.<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/press5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-9932\" title=\"press\" src=\"https:\/\/whatsonni.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/press5-681x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"409\" height=\"614\" \/><\/a>Just weeks after opening thanks to funding from the European Union\u2019s INTERREG IVA Programme, Henry Valentine Bell, retraced his ancestor\u2019s jaunting car-driver roots as he followed in his footsteps on Wednesday 2<sup>nd<\/sup> September, walking the iconic series of suspension tubular bridges, caves, steps and tunnels carved through the spectacular rock face.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMy family have actually lived in Islandmagee since the 17<sup>th<\/sup> Century<\/em>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMy great-grandfather, Robert McCartney, had a close connection to The Gobbins. His job was to taxi visitors via jaunting car from Ballycarry Railway Station to the attraction. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt is true to say that The Gobbins has played a very important role in my family\u2019s history so I am delighted to add this new chapter to my family history and plan to keep visiting for many years to come.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> \u201cI am thrilled to be the 1,000<sup>th<\/sup> visitor to undertake the newly opened path. The last time I walked The Gobbins myself was as a child when it was officially closed. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThen it was quite dangerous and inaccessible in parts \u2013 but as a young child you saw it as an adventure. I have lots of fond memories<\/em>,\u201d said Henry.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Bell was at The Gobbins as part of his local walking group so that he and 10 others experienced the breath-taking views and exposed coastline first-hand.<\/p>\n<p>He said it was everything that visitors \u2013 past and present \u2013 have been raving about: \u201cU<em>ndertaking the new path has been an amazing experience and everything I had hoped it would be. The new structure is a true triumph and brings back to life a much-loved local treasure.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Gobbins was reinstated at a cost of \u00a37.5 million with over half of the funding coming through the EU\u2019s INTERREG IVA Programme, managed by the Special European Union Programmes Body (SEUPB) and administered by the North East Partnership. The Council provided \u00a32 million with further funding of \u00a3200,000 from the Ulster Garden Villages organisation<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Commenting on behalf of SEUPB, Director, Lorraine McCourt, said:<em> \u201cThe Gobbins pathway was funded as a cross-border initiative and is partnered with a similarly picturesque costal attraction, \u2018Sliabh Liag\u2019 in Donegal.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cEuropean funding was awarded to both, to help boost the tourism offering and encourage a greater flow of tourist from both sides of the border.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of this milestone event, the Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough Councillor Billy Ashe said: <em>\u201cIt is extremely poignant that it was a local resident who took the accolade of The Gobbins 1,000<sup>th<\/sup> visitor. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe local community has played a hugely important role in supporting us throughout the construction work and continue to do so now that it is open. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe are thrilled at the success so far and look forward to welcoming thousands more visitors over the months ahead.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> \u201cSince we opened the doors of the new attraction, we have been overwhelmed by the local and global demand for tickets to The Gobbins. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cCurrently the cliff path walk is fully booked until the end of September, with places in October filling up fast. We have even received requests from visitors looking to book ahead for June 2016,\u201d <\/em>the Mayor added.<\/p>\n<p>Walking The Gobbins cliff path requires a reasonable level of fitness. There is also a height restriction in place and booking is essential for the hourly tours. Tickets cost \u00a38.50 per person and \u00a323 for family tickets.
