Where did the name Denvir’s come from? The association of the name Denvir with the hotel dates back to the 18th century when John Denvir is listed on the voter’s list of 1797. The Denvir’s were a local family of Norman extraction, (probably d’Anver originally) and the name was largely peculiar to the area of Lecale. It is likely that the d’Anvers fled to Ireland to escape religious persecution in France. Robert Denvir became the proprietor of the hotel in 1826, with his tenure described as “which he conducted with much success and advantage to the public”. When Robert died in 1875 at the ripe old age of 100, his son Bob Denvir succeeded him as host of the hotel and in 1890, the hotel was sold to Arthur McEvoy, ending the association of the hotel with the Denvir family. However, in 1937 when the property, then known as Magee’s Hotel was purchased by a Mrs Hayes, the memory of Denvir’s seems to have stuck in common parlance in the town, as Mr Hayes “painted out Magee’s name … restored the name of Denvir’s, and Denvir’s it has been ever since”.
Today, as in Robert’s time, Denvir’s continues to operate with “much advantage to the public”. Now guests tend to come from much farther afield than they did in Robert’s day, and we’re sure the comfort they enjoy in our 15 ensuite rooms is a great improvement on what it was then, but the welcome is as warm, and our place in the community just as strong. Fresh local food is served seven days a week, and live entertainment provided every weekend and on occasion, during the week. So why not pay us a visit. We are ideally placed for exploring this part of County Down.
