Hill of The O’Neill & Ranfurly House

Explore a special place at the very heart of Ulster.

Ranfurly House is an impressive Victorian building located in Dungannon and gateway to the ancient site of Hill of The O’Neill.  Hill of The O’Neill is one of the most important heritage sites in Ireland with breath taking panoramic views over seven of the nine counties of Ulster.  This location has been the site of castles, barracks, and seats of power for thousands of years. It is from this very hilltop that The O’Neill dynasty, perhaps one of the greatest of the Irish clans ruled for more than 300 years.

Immerse yourself in the stories, artefacts, and archaeology of our interactive exhibition, which transports you back to the battles, intrigue and politics that shaped the landscape here. You will learn of pivotal events that shaped the history of Ireland - The Flight of the Earls and The Plantation of Ulster.

On a clear day, visitors can take a stroll through the beautiful park or ascend the stairs of the outdoor viewing tower to take in the spectacular views of Lough Neagh, the Sperrins, the Mournes, the Cooley mountains and the neighbouring counties.

The centrepiece of a visit to the Hill of The O’Neill is the permanent exhibition in Ranfurly House. This tells the story of the Flight of The Earls and the Plantation of Ulster, and the important role that Dungannon played in these two historical events that would forever change these islands.  The exhibition vividly evokes the life of Irish chieftain in the 16th century, in its extravagant fashions, fighting and feasting.  You’ll find out about the Plantation of Ulster, what it was, who the Planters were and the difficulties they faced. You’ll also discover how Ulster, administered from Dungannon by Sir Arthur Chichester, was changed forever, moving away from the ancient Gaelic laws and beliefs. It’s a gripping story that once heard, will never be forgotten. From the indoor exhibition, you’ll make your way to the next stage of your visit – on to the famous Hill of The O'Neill.

Our conference rooms and event spaces give you the place you need to create your own piece of history. With living history, banqueting and falconry experiences, concerts, live shows, and workshops and with on-site catering available, we will help you to plan a visit that makes a lasting impression.
