In August 2021, in what she would describe as ‘midlife’, Deborah Sloan knew something had to change. She left a twenty-year academic career and began to write about her experiences of leaving.
“Often, the signs are there. We know we need to leave. But whether it’s a job, a relationship, a place, a situation, or even a set of beliefs, it’s hard to start again.”
In a collection of essays entitled Everything I Know about Leaving, Deborah explores what happens when you begin to question everything you thought mattered in life and realise it’s not just one thing you have to leave. Covering the intersections of identity, self-image, career, marriage, motherhood, and faith, the essays are highly relatable to anyone trying to figure out who they are and what happens next.
Join Deborah to celebrate the launch of this collection of essays on Thursday 20 March at 6:30pm at Boundary Taproom. It will be an opportunity to hear some of her honest and humorous reflections on the journey of leaving. (Books will be available to buy for £10.)
Deborah Sloan grew up and still lives in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She writes regularly for local publications, is a frequent contributor to BBC Radio programmes and produces a weekly newsletter on Substack called ‘Days Like This with Deborah Sloan’. Everything I Know About Leaving is her first non-fiction book.
