Northern Ireland Opera presents a new production of Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman's legendary musical, Follies.
It’s 1971 and the Weismann Girls and their partners are returning to the decaying theatre on Broadway which holds so many memories for them for one last time before it is demolished. Time may have moved on for all the girls of the Follies, but inside the theatre as the reunion begins, old connections stir, rivalries reignite and past ghosts are woken. By the time they leave the theatre for one last time, their world’s will have shifted and nothing will be the same again.
This legendary musical won 7 Tony Awards for the original production in 1971 by Harold Prince. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Goldman, songs include Broadway Baby, I’m Still Here, Could I Leave You, and Losing My Mind. This new production will be directed by Cameron Menzies, whose award-winning production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Into The Woods at The Lyric Theatre won Best Production at The Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards in 2022.
Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Book by James Goldman. From an adaptation by Christopher Bond. Produced originally on Broadway by Harold Prince. Orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick. By special arrangement with Cameron Mackintosh. Presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International.
