Welcome to Linking Landscape and Literature – a new immersive tour presented by Seamus Heaney HomePlace in collaboration with Lough Neagh’s Stories!
Join us on a captivating journey through the landscapes that inspired one of Ireland’s most beloved poets and discover the places that shaped his beautiful and heartfelt poetry.
Itinerary:
11:00am – 12.30pm – Arrive at Seamus Heaney HomePlace. Begin your day with a guided tour of our award-winning exhibition. Immerse yourself in the life, work, and inspiration of Seamus Heaney through curated displays of poetry, photographs, and personal artefacts, all highlighting his profound connection to the rural landscape of South Derry.
12:30pm – 12.45pm – Depart for the eel weir at the Lough Neagh Fishermen’s Co-Operative Society in Toomebridge – one of five locations featured on our Open Ground trail.
12:45pm – 2.30pm – Arrive at the eel weir at the Lough Neagh Fishermen’s Co-Operative Society in Toomebridge. Here, Gary and Anne-Marie from Lough Neagh’s Stories will introduce you to the authentic landscapes and local voices that influenced Heaney’s work. Through poetry and storytelling, you will gain a deeper understanding of how this region shaped his writing. Afterwards, take a short walk to the Lock-Keeper’s Cottage in Toomebridge, where you will board their passenger vessel for a peaceful cruise along the picturesque Toome Canal into Lough Neagh. Discover the rich heritage of the local commercial fishing industry and its colourful characters, brought to life through Heaney’s words.
2:30pm – Travel at your own pace to explore the remaining Open Ground sites. Stroll through fields, lanes, and landmarks that played a central role in Heaney’s creative life, and take time to absorb the natural beauty and literary significance of these unique places.

- This is a self-guided and self-drive tour. Participants must have their own transport. Maps and directions will be provided.
- Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear for outdoor activities.
- The boat trip is weather dependent.
- Tours must be booked at least 48 hours in advance.
