History Talk - Cenél nEógain

As part of Seachtain na Gaeilge, join us at Hill of The O’Neill & Ranfurly House for a fascinating history talk with acclaimed historian Brian Lacey.

Based in the Dungannon–Armagh region, the O’Neill dynasty ruled most of Ulster from 1241 until 1607. However, their early medieval ancestors belonged to a much smaller kingdom and dynasty: Cenél nEógain, the origin of the name “Tyrone,” which itself traces back to the related territory of Inishowen in Donegal. Drawing on insights from his latest book, Brian Lacey will explore how, when, and why this once marginal kingdom rose to dominate the entire province.
