Maps have always been the foundation of how humans understood their surroundings. Historians and Artists make use of the science of maps to interpret and comment on the world.

The artists and scientists in the show use maps in different ways to highlight how the earth and space can be understood. From maps of comets, asteroids and black holes to sculptures of the coast, the artworks reflect the beauty of maps in many forms.

Ken Bartley, curator of the show, was a co-author of an Atlas of Medieval History, published by Manchester University Press in 2006. As co-owner of the ArtisAnn Gallery, with Ann McVeigh, this show reflects his interest in maps as a key part of art, science and history.

As Chris Wilson explains: "to read a map, is to see a landscape, of roads, boundaries and borders that speak of human geographies. I aim to juxtapose these human time frames against the passage of geological time, the language of maps allows me to do that".

The exhibition features work by artists, scientists and historians:

Ken Bartley, Alan Fitzsimmons, Karen Daye-Hutchinson, Shauna Fox, Aisling O'Beirn and Chris Wilson.

You can also buy art from this exhibition through the Own Art scheme which gives you an interest-free loan over 10 months (and you still get to take the art home immediately the exhibition ends).
