Trevor Birney is a BAFTA and Emmy-nominated producer, director and journalist who has never shied away from speaking truth to power. He produced the controversial BAFTA award-winning box-office sensation Kneecap, written and directed by Rich Peppiatt. Over the years, Trevor's powerful, uncompromising, storytelling has earned him numerous national and international awards in film and journalism.
Join him in conversation with Kathy Clugston as Trevor reflects on his long career in journalism and film-making shining a light on untold truths, the making of Kneecap, the legacy of that film and his latest projects including a further film-making collaboration with Rich Peppiatt.
Trevor’s other films include Saipan, Culture Club (both Tribeca 2025), Cyndi Lauper: Let the Canary Sing (Tribeca 2023). Previously, he produced the Critics’ Choice Award-winning and Sundance hit film The Go-Go’s, directed by Alison Ellwood. He also directed the RTÉ television documentary series Quinn Country, which aired in 2022 and The Dodger in 2025.
His slate also includes the Emmy-nominated films No Stone Unturned, directed by Alex Gibney; the Sundance World Competition film Gaza; the Emmy-nominated Elián for CNN Films; Netflix Original documentary Mercury 13; and George Best: All by Himself for ESPN.
Trevor is the founder of film company, Fine Point Films, the television production company Below The Radar and the multi-award-winning investigative journalism website The Detail. He has written two books: Quinn, an Irish bestseller, and Shooting Crows, published in 2024.
Kathy Clugston is a freelance broadcaster. She has been hosting Gardeners' Question Time on BBC Radio 4 since 2019. She also presents Sunday Club and The Ticket on BBC Radio Ulster.
