Join the author Máire Zepf and illustrator Andrew Whitson to hear about their paths into the creative industries, the highs and lows of creating memorable children's books, their infectious passion for children's literature, their own creative processes and their collaborative experiences creating award-winning books together. The conversation, led by journalist and broadcaster Lynette Fay, will be interspersed with art, stories, and a wealth of lived experience.

 

Originally from County Down, author Máire Zepf has written 17 books for children in Irish and English, from picture books to a verse novel for young adults.  She is the winner of numerous awards for children’s fiction including the KPMG/CBI Children’s Book of the Year, 5 LAI Children’s Book Awards and 2 international White Ravens. Máire’s books appear in 10 languages worldwide.

 

As well as writing children's books, Máire is an award-winning screenwriter. Most recently, her Rita series of picture books, with illustrator Mr. Ando, has been adapted for television (TG4). From 2017-19, Máire was the first Children’s Writing Fellow for Northern Ireland, based at the Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry at QUB.

 

In addition to her writing, Máire is actively involved in promoting literacy and creativity among children. She conducts regular workshops encouraging young readers to explore their own storytelling abilities.

 

Andrew Whitson is an illustrator, author and educator from Belfast. He has created and illustrated over 40 books, from children’s picture books to Celtic illustrated books for adults. His most recent works are the popular Molly series with Malachy Doyle, and the award-winning Rita series with Máire Zepf. His illustrations are noted for their distinctive style and contribution to Irish-language children’s publishing, and his work is available in many languages across the world.

 

Over the years Andrew has won several prestigious book awards - the CBI Illustration Award, RAI Book Award for the Rita series, and the Ibby Illustration Award. Andrew is the Creative Director of An tSnáthaid Mhór, a blossoming independent publishing house in Belfast.

 

Lynette Fay has enjoyed an acclaimed career in the media spanning over two decades. She has established herself as a well-known and respected television and radio presenter, writer and producer.

 

After years as a broadcaster and producer with the BBC, she has now built a reputation as a freelance presenter who enjoys giving a platform to her favourite subjects such as women’s concerns, her love and great knowledge of music, and the celebration of Irish culture, language, and storytelling.
