History Talk: ‘Come in, Dungannon! We know you’re Knox!’

From 1692 the Knox family were owners and ‘lords of the soil’ of Dungannon town and its neighbourhood.

Proud of their Scottish origins and their links to John Knox, the Scots reformer, they were the essence of the Irish land-owning élite: politically ambitious and generally absentee landlords.

In this illustrated talk, Aidan Fee will explore the rise and fall of this dynasty in its varying descriptions: from ‘Thomas Knox’ the Belfast-based merchant; to another ‘Thomas Knox’ ennobled as Lord Northland and Baron Welles; and finally, to yet another ‘Thomas Knox’ ennobled as Viscount Ranfurly.
