Irish Surnames - an exploration of their meanings and origins: A talk by Déaglán Ó Doibhlin, Irish Language Officer, Mid Ulster District Council

From O’Neill and Lynn to Kissick and Buchanon, the diverse surnames of Mid Ulster provide a unique insight into our shared history. Surnames provide a deeper understanding of our family history and cultural heritage and function as deeply personal markers of identity and place. They help us connect with those around us and uncover new information about our ancestors. In this fascinating talk on Tuesday 4th March, Déaglán Ó Doibhlin will talk about local surname origins in Gaelic Ireland and Scotland, France, Lowland Scotland, England, and Wales. Déaglán will discuss how the process of anglicisation has altered and disguised many names and look at the links between seemingly unrelated surnames such as Mac Cathmhaoil and Campbell, Glasgow and McCloskey, Grimes and Ó Gormlaith.
