Kids take one giant leap into libraries!

Libraries Minister, Nelson McCausland, launched this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, on behalf of Libraries NI, at Finaghy Library on Wednesday 23rd June, with a little help from the pupils of Finaghy Primary School.

The Summer Reading Challenge takes place from Saturday 26th June – Saturday 4th September, and aims to keep children reading throughout the school summer holidays. This year’s theme is ‘Space Hop’ which is designed to create a ‘buzz’ around reading and all Northern Ireland libraries are preparing to launch children’s imaginations into orbit through this intergalactic book adventure.

The Challenge is simple – Children are encouraged to read six or more books of their choice during the holidays with collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate or medal for every child who completes the Challenge.

Speaking at the launch, Minister McCausland said:

“The Summer Reading Challenge continues to go from strength to strength every year. This exciting initiative not only encourages our children to read and enjoy books but also promotes quality time and interaction between parents, carers and children. Libraries play a vital role in the development of our children and I would encourage all parents and carers to bring their children along to their local library to take up this challenge.”

The Summer Reading Challenge is an immensely popular and successful reading initiative. Now in its twelfth year, it is created by The Reading Agency, which is an independent charity working to inspire more people to read more.

Libraries NI Chief Executive, Irene Knox explains:

“Research shows that children really enjoy taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge, which is a great way to keep children entertained over the holidays. More importantly, it has been proven that children who take part in the Challenge read more books and read more widely than those who don’t, with potentially life-changing results.”

Northern Ireland Libraries are inviting children age 4 – 11, parents and carers to participate in this year’s Challenge from Saturday 26th June – Saturday 4th September.

An interactive Space Hop (www.spacehop.org.uk) website has just been launched, linking children with top authors and illustrators, and giving them space to talk about their favourite books and to share reading ideas.

Waterways Ireland Loughfest takes place on Enniskillen’s Broadmeadow on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th June.  The free family orientated event previously attracted thousands of visitors to the waterway for the inaugural event last year with the 2010 line-up ensuring a thrilling action-packed programme of water and land based activities that is sure to entertain everyone!  Cool FM DJ Gareth Stewart will compere the action from the Tampa Bay Water Ski Show Team, Freestyle Jet-skiers and Wakeboard Teams during the weekend long event.

Florida’s Tampa Bay Water Ski Show Team will make a return appearance to dazzle the spectators with their multi-award winning performance displays. The Tampa Bay Water Ski Show Team, a group of talented skiers, will create synchronized ballet lines, blistering barefoot skiing and other acrobatic daredevil feats. The Xtreme Action Freestyle Jet ski Team will also be in attendance headed by Pro World Jet Ski Champion Anthony Burgess, wowing the crowds with inverts of up to 20ft.

The “Lakeland & Inland Waterway Family Fun Day”, providing free entertainment for all the family, centered on the Broadmeadow and Enniskillen Castle areas, will compliment the action on the water.  Experience for yourself a “Taste of the Erne”, with live cookery demonstrations and sampling, take part in a Heritage Walking Tour, enjoy the wonders of the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark with Fossil Fun or Exploding Earthquakes, or let the kids loose in the bouncy castle, paint ball and laser tag zone.  Waterbus trips will be available to enable visitors to leisurely enjoy the beauty of Lough Erne.  A range of boats will be on display from Mastercraft Ireland, Hanna Boats and jet Products.  The Edge Watersports will have a wide range of watersports equipment available to purchase.

Northern Ireland to perform.  The team enjoys performing at Waterways Ireland Loughfest as the location is superb.  It’s like performing in a natural amphitheatre. The water-ski team have been practicing hard during the winter months to give the crowd a different show than they would have seen last year and they will be making the trip from their practice lake in Tampa Bay Florida. A FATHER’S SORROW REVERBERATES IN NEW COLLECTION FROM POET R.A. WELCH

‘Iron hopeless sorrow’ is the overarching tone of Constanza, the new poetry collection from poet and critic Robert Anthony Welch, written in the aftermath of the accidental death of his 26-year-old son  Egan three years ago.

The collection of 40 poems represents the poet’s deeply personal reflections and meditation on the loss of his son in particular, and mortality in general.

Constanza, published by Lagan Press, with support from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, is named after a city in Romania on the Black Sea, once known as Tomis.

Welch explains:  “I had been reading a Latin poet called Ovid, a book of his with the wonderful title Tristia, meaning something like ‘sadnesses’. It is a book of poems lamenting the fact that the poet, Ovid, has been banished from Rome for some offence he has caused the Emperor. This exile from Rome is like an exile from life, so that Ovid, in his grief in exile, is a man cut off from all that he loves.

“He is sent to a place called Tomis, now known as Constanza. The mood of Ovid in his bleak exile seemed to match my own mood in my grief, and I worked on some of his poems translating their sadness into my own.

“In doing this I hope that I widened my grief by taking it into another person’s life, another time. When I read Ovid’s description of what it was like to sail through the storms and heavy seas on the way to Tomis, it seemed very like what it was like to go through the sheer mass and bulk of the sorrow you feel at the death of someone you love beyond speech or saying.”

The reference to ‘iron sorrow’ comes from a poem called Lost to Those Waters, where the sense of loss is palpable and immense –

Iron sorrow wrung his poor
exhausted heart, drove a shockwave
from his stomach to his eyes all
full of tears.  He opened wide his arms
to hold his mother, found
she was the river.

Welch is relentless in his need to address his pain and that of his family, with the result that his work directly makes the reader feel and mourn for his or her own loss and grief.

This finely crafted and reworked unburdening, the ‘improvement of truth’ which poetry essentially represents, is what Welch believes is the job of a poet.

“There is no hiding place from sorrow or tragedy.  This is what poets try to do, otherwise they are not poets. We must write as truthfully as we can about what scares the bejaysus out of us. We must face the terror of what it is to be us lot,” added Welch.

While writing the poems undoubtedly had a therapeutic effect, Welch was conscious of his role as poet.

“If the work is true, then you need to move out of your own particular circumstance, otherwise you are just howling away in the prison of your ego, and you will lose your audience.”

Some of the poems, for instance The Track in Sun, flowed out of the poet, but most of the others were reworked many times, with The Binary being the poet’s more favoured as he believes he most successfully captures his son’s humour and fierce intelligence.

There will be a reading from Constanza on Tuesday, June 22, at a reception in the University of Ulster’s Coleraine Campus (Room H215) from 6.30pm with an introduction from poet Ciaran Carson and on Wednesday, June 23, at the Members’ Room, Royal Irish Academy, Dublin from 6pm with an introduction from poet Anthony Cronin and reading from the actor Richard Dormer, Welch’s son-in-law.

All the fun of the Fair in Strabane!

Strabane Fair events kick off on Friday evening 25th June with the launch of the 24hr Artahon which will happen in ASDA’s 24 hour Store with artists from both Strabane and Donegal taking part which will culminate in an exhibition in the Alley Gallery from 2pm on Saturday. While running alongside the launch at the Alley Theatre at 8pm will be the finale of Sounds like Summer bands competition  to decide who will be this year’s winner from amongst stiff competition from throughout the region.

On Saturday the Farmer’s market will operate for the full day from the Canal Basin providing the back drop for the days events and in  the Alley Courtyard where they will be joined mid day by other stall holders to create our own unique food festival. Specialised food markets and catering demonstrations from professional chefs from Oysters ,Mambo Jax Catering and  Masala will take place along side  demonstrations from the Women’s Institute showing traditional fayre .Strabane Ethnic Community Association will also showcase international foods at the Alley court yard during the afternoon’s event.

At 1.30 the Carnival parade will take to the streets with community groups and samba bands from all over the district joining local bands and groups to create a carnival atmosphere. Glenside Training Centre and Lifford Recabcare adults have been working on new carnival pieces with help from SECA and students from the Holycross  Collage arts department. Workshops have been on going in the various schools and the children will be in the parade with Streetwise, plus artists and performers from multicultural traditions which will add a new dimension to the show. All the children have been enthusiastic in practising their new skills in music or dance routes, so please come along and show your support.

In keeping with this year’s theme Strabane Fair Day, Past and Present on Saturday 26th of June our events at the Canal Basin will reflect this time period throughout  the day. Our stage performers, Craic, Dixie Kings and Knotty Pine  will plays songs reflecting the various music eras. This will be intermingled with performances from our young people who under the initiative delivered as part of the Peace Cultural, Heritage and Identity programme,  have learnt about multi- cultural dance and music, costumes. They will perform along side professional artists from Arts Eska and Gathering Rhymes at front  of stage while else where our young people will perform short street dramas reflecting Strabane history of hiring Fairs. Puddlealley drama group will also perform a short showcase during the afternoon.

Indeed no Fair would be complete without the sideshows entertainment and Strabane will have professional street performers and buskers to entertain the crowds in the Castle street area alongside the stall holders and retailers. In the Canal basin, we will have stalls, bouncy entertainment, olde time games, archery and at 3pm the Bark to Basic Dog Show.

Given the various workshops that have taken place in the district over the past months funded under the Peace III North West Cluster Special European Union Programme, there will be more fringe events happening into the evening for people to join. Artists exhibition and demonstration in the Alley Gallery  will take place from 2pm

The evening performance in the theatre is an culmination of story gathering around the history of the area in the Donemana, Newtownstewart, Castlederg and Strabane which will be staged at the Alley theatre at 7.30pm 26th June 2010 and supported by readings from Wilson Burgess on reflections of past times..

Finally at 8pm, Music 4Uth local young bands who are working under the guidance of Terry McCafferty will perform on our outdoor stage in the Alley Courtyard. Also new music created from Garage music workshops undertaken by the Nerve Centre tutor Martin McGill in Castlederg will be showcased there.

World first iPhone app promotes Belfast music scene

Belfast City Council is using the very latest technology to promote the city’s thriving music scene, by launching the world’s first iPhone app on the subject.

The app accompanies three other complementary initiatives – a new website, www.belfastmusic.org, an expanded Belfast Music exhibition at the Oh Yeah Music Centre in the Cathedral Quarter, and a weekly music bus tour of the city’s musical landscape – being launched this evening (Wednesday 16 June). They have been initiated by Belfast City Council, with the support of the Oh Yeah Music Centre, BBC Northern Ireland, the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

As more and more people use their mobile phones to find out information, the free ‘Belfast Music’ iPhone app allows local music fans and visitors alike to find out not only what’s happening on the scene at the moment but also to explore the city’s rich musical heritage.

The app features:

  • An interactive music tour, narrated by BBC broadcaster Stuart Bailie, and featuring a soundtrack by the likes of David Holmes, Neil Hannon and the Ulster Orchestra, Rudi, The Undertones, Ash, Therapy? and many more;
  • a Hall Of Fame, introducing the user to Belfast’s music legends;
  • up to the minute gig listings and news, making sure music lovers don’t miss a beat by their favourite band; and
  • a showcase section, introducing the best in contemporary Belfast music.

Officially launching the initiatives, the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Pat Convery, commented:

“Belfast music receives high international praise and our latest generation of musicians are playing a crucial role in revitalising the city.  Our city is now lit up throughout the year with a vibrant calendar of events. Every night of the week, venues in the city are busy with local bands, DJs, traditional musicians, orchestras, jazz players and songwriters.

“This is an art form that is defining the new mood of Belfast and these new initiatives aim to profile and promote Belfast’s reputation as the birthplace of exceptional music”.

The launch has been endorsed by the Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure, Nelson McCausland MLA, who stated:

“Northern Ireland musicians and creative talent have long demonstrated their ability to compete and succeed on the world stage.  This exciting development showcases this success but also demonstrates the increasing convergence between music and digital media and the new opportunities for innovative products and services”.

The development of the app has involved many of the leading lights in the local music media.  One of the contributors, is the publisher of AU (Alternative Ulster) magazine, Jonny Tiernan, who commented:

“The ‘Belfast Music’ app is an innovative and unique way to introduce the rich heritage of the Northern Irish musical landscape to people. It is both fun and informative, and manages to reflect the extraordinary diversity of talent we have in this country. I’d recommend it to everyone as an experience to take part in.”

Music iPhone app creator, Gawain Morrison, of Filmtrip, concluded: “I’ve been in and around the music scene of Belfast for 15 years, and have always been impressed with the talent that we’ve produced, so I’m really proud that we were able to create the iPhone app to showcase where we’ve come from and where we’re going to.  I think it shouts to the world how cool Belfast has become.”

A dedicated new website, www.belfastmusic.org, is also being launched at the same time as the app, about which David Lewis, director of Culture Northern Ireland, said:

“The Belfast music scene is alive and kicking, but sometimes it can be difficult keeping up with what’s going on. Audiences are increasingly switched on to the digital world.  It’s now second nature for many people to find information on their computer or mobile phone. BelfastMusic.org is simply responding to that need.”

Alongside the app and website, an exhibition telling the story of the Belfast music scene has been greatly expanded.  Originally opened in April 2009, the Belfast Music exhibition at the Oh Yeah centre has added more memorabilia and storyboards, adding the stories of the showbands, traditional music, rock and the modern dance culture to those of the blues and punk eras.

“It never fails to surprise me how much we have achieved,” says Stuart Bailie, CEO of Oh Yeah and curator of the exhibition.

“Collectively, we’ve sold well over 100 million records. Our music is loved all over the world and we’ve achieved these results in spite of many challenges.  Music is our greatest natural resource.”

The Belfast Music app, www.belfastmusic.org and the Belfast Music exhibition have been part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the European Sustainable Competitiveness Programme for Northern Ireland and administered by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB), through the Tourism Innovation Fund.

Siobhan McCauley, NITB Director of Product Development, said:

“The Tourism Innovation Fund seeks out fresh, cutting edge ideas which will put Northern Ireland firmly on the visitor’s map. Music has a huge appeal to everyone and Northern Ireland has a very strong musical heritage that forms a key part of our unique culture. The new app and website, as well as the exhibition at the Oh Yeah centre will not only showcase our existing musical talent but will also ensure visitors have up to date information on local events and festivals.”

The popular Belfast Music Tour also has been relaunched for the summer.  The tour takes in many of the landmarks associated with the Belfast music story, including the birthplaces of the likes of Ruby Murray, Van Morrison, Brian Kennedy, Gary Moore and Duke Special, as well as the places that inspired their songs and the venues which put the city on the international music map, from the Ulster Hall to the Limelight, the Maritime Hotel to Queen’s University.

This week, Glasgowbury will make history as the first festival to ever promote itself through HMV in-store gigs.

LaFaro and Wonder Villains will help Glasgowbury become the first ever festival to launch themselves through HMV, with gigs in Belfast and Derry this weekend.

The mighty LaFaro will play HMV Belfast (Donegall Arcade) on Friday 18th June from 1pm while Derry wunderkids The Wonder Villains will play HMV Derry (Richmond Centre) on Saturday 19th June from 2pm.

Radio One pledge support to Glasgowbury

Rory McConnell and his BBC Radio One Introducing NI team will return to Glasgowbury this year in association with the Small But Massive Main Stage.

After the success of last year’s involvement when Rory and his Radio One team recorded the entire main stage programme, their return comes at a time when the chosen acts will help Glasgowbury celebrate 10 years at the heart of new music.

Radio One’s commitment has helped Glasgowbury and its unsigned acts become more recognised on an international scale, promoting the best in new and emerging music.

“Since the show became part of the BBC Introducing strand our focus changed completely to exclusively N.Irish and Irish unsigned and under the radar artists, getting involved with Glasgowbury just made so much sense.

“As before where priorities with festival organisers might not always be about the music, it was refreshing to get involved with a group of people who had one thing on their mind: showcasing the amazing music made on this island and celebrating it in front of as many people as possible.”

Fighting With Wire will headline the Small But Massive stage after ten years of festival involvement, propelling both themselves and the event into a new era.

“It’s a big year ahead for Fighting With Wire. There’s a lot of people calling on them to stand up and be considered a world class act where they’ll be expected to regularly stand on stages the size of the Glasgowbury main stage.

“So the night of the 24th will reassure those people, and also be a very proud moment for Paddy and myself who have known Cahir from the beginning.”

Looking ahead to this year’s event, Rory is keen that this year’s acts use the platform wisely.

“I see last year as the showcase of N.Irish and Irish talent to the world, and this year now we’ve got peoples attention it’ll be important to make the most of it.

“People know there’s an amazing scene here now, so Glasgowbury 2010 is a chance for bands to act upon it and make the most of peoples ear while we’ve got it. If you’re a band lucky enough to play the festival in 2010 then invite as many people as you possibly can that are in a position to help your career, over to see you.

“Paddy should be inundated by all the bands playing asking for guestlist for all the industry folk coming to see you. Glasgowbury’s your stage, use it wisely.

“I think the way things are going this could be the last Glasgowbury as we know it, so the festival itself could be one to keep an eye on.

“It’s like a bubbling pot that’s about to boil over, I don’t think it’ll be able to stay contained much longer.”

Open House Festival Belfast announces Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine, White Lies & Villagers

Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine, White Lies and Villagers all added to Open House Festival line-up

Indie giants Modest Mouse, gothic-Americana act Iron & Wine, conquering London guitar trio The White Lies and the single most exciting irish act of the last few years, Villagers, have all been added to this year’s 12th Open House Festival in Belfast, 7th – 12th September.

The Festival has also announced that Coors Light will be title sponsor for a third year.

Open House, the “not in a muddy field festival”, takes place in venues throughout the arts and cultural flavoured Cathedral Quarter in Belfast’s city centre, including a large marquee in Custom House Square. It’s already shaping up to be quite a line-up with Wilco, Seasick Steve, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Felice Brothers, Dave Rawlings Machine, The Low Anthem, Field Music and Lissie, all previously announced.

Open House also features Chillifest – a fiery food & music phenomenon within Open House festival – featuring funky festival sideshows and Ireland’s only hot chilli pepper eating contest. Hayseed Dixie have just been confirmed as the ChilliFest headliners for the afternoon of Sunday 12th Sep. All chilli heads are hereby given fit and proper notice.

From the makers of Training Day comes Brooklyn’s Finest, a slick urban drama set in the morally ambiguous world of the New York police force. Letters To Juliet
