ICONIC EXHIBITION OPENS AT THE MAC

Award winning artist Gilbert & George launch ‘SCAPEGOATING PICTURES for Belfast’ at the MAC

One of the world’s most recognisable and provocative artistic duos Gilbert & George opened their most significant exhibition in Ireland in almost 20 years at the MAC, Belfast, last night. The London based artists were in town to open a specially curated exhibition SCAPEGOATING PICTURES for Belfast, which will be on show throughout all three galleries in the MAC until April.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Gilbert & George’s first meeting at St. Martin’s School of Art in 1967 and their identification of themselves as ‘Living Sculptures’, two people as one artist. The Turner Prize winning artist is the latest high profile exhibition to be held in the MAC, following Andy Warhol and David Hockney, which drew thousands from across the UK and Ireland, and further afield, to Belfast.

The ‘SCAPEGOATING PICTURES’ opens with a bold statement of intent: “We want our Art to bring out the Bigot from inside the Liberal and conversely to bring out the Liberal from inside the Bigot.”  The exhibition unflinchingly describes the volatile and mysterious reality of our increasingly technological, multi-faith and multi-cultural world. It is a world in which paranoia, fundamentalism, surveillance, religion, accusation and victimhood become moral shades of the city’s temper. As with much of their work, Gilbert & George themselves take their place in these ‘SCAPEGOATING PICTURES’ as shattered and spirit like forms.

Speaking at the opening, Áine McVerry from the MAC said: “There are few modern artists who have given their whole lives to their art in the same way that Gilbert & George have, and we are delighted to have this remarkable exhibition in the MAC. Like all Gilbert & George exhibitions, SCAPEGOATING PICTURES for Belfast is provocative and challenging, and it is an incredibly exciting exhibition with which to open our 2018 programme.

“It has been almost 20 years since Gilbert & George exhibited in Belfast, and, while the city and community have changed a lot in that time, we still see division, disagreement and, often, an unwillingness to confront uncomfortable truths. Hopefully, visitors from all across Ireland and the UK, and further afield, will take the opportunity over the coming months to visit this exhibition and challenge their own preconceptions.”

Gilbert & George were on top form at the launch event and spoke about their excitement at being in Belfast: “We are thrilled to be back in Belfast. We are so excited to be showing 40 of our SCAPEGOATING PICTURES to the people of Belfast and its visitors.

“We hope you will all find this exhibition exhilarating, thought-provoking, joyful, beautiful and liberating. We love exhibiting in Belfast!”

The exhibition will run until 22 April 2018 in the Sunken, Tall and Upper Galleries at the MAC, Belfast. The exhibition is open daily from 10am-7pm and admission is free.

Heaney Homeplace Bellaghy to host International Women’s Day Conference

The Belle of Mid Ulster Association to host  International Women’s Day Conference which will be held in The Heaney HomePlace Bellaghy on Thursday 8th March.

Our chosen charity which we hope to continue to support is The Northern Ireland Air Ambulance.

The organisers of the Conference have decided to source their Speakers this year from Mid Ulster and have a truly inspirational line up of local ladies.

The 2017 Belle of Mid-Ulster, Ailis Corey, is a two-time blood cancer survivor and a stem-cell transplant recipient.  A keen advocate for blood cancer awareness and blood, stem cell and organ donation, Ailis is a member of the ‘Transplant Sport Northern Ireland’ team and has represented them at the British Transplant Games on three occasions.

Clodagh Dunlop will speak about her remarkable journey when at 37 years old, an inspirational young front line Police Officer was left with locked-in syndrome after suffering a devastating brain stem stroke.  Clodagh spent months trapped inside her body unable to move or speak and was only able to communicate by blinking.  However, she astounded everyone with her miraculous recovery and chose to do a sky dive to mark the day she almost lost her life.

Emma Heatherington is a bestselling Author from Dungannon, Co Tyrone.  The mum of five has penned ten book including the international hit ‘The Legacy of Lucy Harte’ and the life story of Ireland’s Queen of Country Music, Philomena Begley.  She is also an acclaimed scriptwriter, songwriter and poet.  Her latest novel ‘A Part of Me and You’ was published in January by Harper Collins.

The main theme of the Conference will be “The Resilience of Women” and our Speakers have already demonstrated that they have this quality not only in their own lives but as they have touched the lives of others.

The Conference in Bellaghy would be a source of information, entertainment and enlightenment.  We have accommodation for up to 200 people but delegates will be included on a first come first served basis.  There are no barriers to who attends this Conference so every lady from Mid Ulster is entitled to attend.  Should you wish to reserve a place please book online at Eventbrite.

This is an event not to be missed!

Fringe Festival hit set for The Old Courthouse

Chopping Chillies was a great hit at Edinburgh 2016 and we are delighted to welcome the show to The Old Courthouse for one night only on Saturday 3 February.

This solo show, written and performed by Clair Whitfield and directed by award winning director Guy Masterson. A mix of prose, storytelling and physical theatre weaving London and India in a tale of fate, friendship and personal transformation.

Chopping Chillies tells the tale of Ajna Jan, an Indian martial artist from Kerala, who following a tragic accident inherits his uncle’s cobblers shop in Camden Town. He moves from Cochin to London and uses his knowledge of the body’s pressure points to alter his customer’s footwear, posture, confidence and ultimately their lives. Powerless to repair his own life, he finds himself challenged only when a young, dreadlocked hipster Katie opens up a cafe next door, and begins making food that reminds him of his lost family and the country he left behind. This unlikely friendship changes both their lives.

This is an enthralling tale, full of charm and surprises. Tickets available from Box Office T: 9442 8331 or online www.theoldcourthousetheatre.com
