This experience is for you. The Chocolate Manor will help you create a selection of moulded chocolate treats!   3. In Touch with Earth’s Treasures, Ulster Museum, County Antrim, 19 February. A sensory tour of crystals, fossils, elements and more with Curator Mike Simms. This is a free drop-in event, providing an opportunity to handle objects with different shapes, textures, densities and even smells, and to discover some of the reasons behind these varying properties.   4. Grace’s Transport Timeline, Ulster Transport Museum, County Down, 22 & 23 February. CBeebies star, Grace Webb, will be joining the Ulster Transport Museum’s Rail Gallery this February! You might recognise Grace Webb from her CBeebies show ‘Grace’s Amazing Machines’ where she explores some of the biggest, fastest and most amazing machines in the world! As part of NI Science Festival, Grace will delve into some of the incredible machines on display.   5. Hive Choir Presents: The Bog! Bellaghy, County Londonderry, 22 February. The HIVE Choir will kick off their special weekend of events with their annual ‘HIVEsplaining’ concert at the Seamus Heaney HomePlace, where they explain a scientific topic through song. The concert will premiere a slew of new original songs about Irish boglands. Together, navigate the morass of historical and mythological interpretations of bogs and peatlands, as well as the latest scientific findings that reveal the ecological importance of bogs.
  6. Music In Fermanagh presents The Fidelio Trio at St Macartin’s Cathedral, Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, 18th The virtuosic Fidelio Trio return for an evening of exceptional chamber music. Renowned for their dynamic performances and international acclaim, The Fidelio Trio offers a rich exploration of the string trio repertoire. Shortlisted for the 2016 Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards, The Fidelio Trio broadcast regularly on BBC Radio 3, RTÉ Lyric FM, and have been featured on Sky Arts.
  7. Gospel Fest Goes West, Omagh, County Tyrone, 22 February. Omagh & Fintona Methodist Circuit are delighted to present Gospel Fest Goes West at the Strule Arts Centre. This year is the 10th Anniversary of GFGW and will be another great night of Gospel music featuring Jenn Bostic, International Christian Music Artist from Nashville, the singer/songwriter of the award-winning ballad “Jealous of the Angels”.
  8. Foraging Afloat, Strangford Lough Activity Centre, County Down, 22 & 23 February. Spring is arriving on Strangford Lough and with it the arrival of an array of seasonal wild food emerges from the land and water. Join Rory Martin, David Thompson & Celia Spouncer from Wild About Tours for a unique guide to the sights and flavour of the area. Rory will guide a kayaking tour with some facts and folklore of the islands, castles rocks and wrecks. Learn some local history, spot the wildlife and improve your paddling skills. You will stop off at an island where David & Celia will share the salty delights and unique taste of Strangford Lough.
  9. Whitework Embroidery at the Marketplace Theatre and Arts Centre, Armagh, County Armagh, 21 February. Discover the timeless elegance of Whitework embroidery introducing participants to the delicate art of stitching white or natural-coloured thread on matching fabric.   7. Stargazing Evening at the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, County Armagh, 14 February. Join Armagh Observatory and Planetarium for a series of Stargazing evenings. For each session they will have a team of experts to help you navigate the night sky using telescopes (weather depending) along with a dome show in our digital theatre and an astronomer talk.
  8. February Slemish Market Supper Club, Ballymena, County Antrim, 15 February. Love local food? Then this is the perfect way to treat that special someone or enjoy a night with friends. Join Slemish Market Supper Club for their February dining experience in Desperate Dan’s Ballymena. Chef Rob Curley will cook a surprise 6 course Valentine’s menu using responsible produce from Slemish Market Garden and Co. Antrim for a night not to be missed.
  9. Paddle Back in Time – The Monks, the Vikings and the Smugglers of Strangford Lough, Killinchy, County Down, 15 and 16 February. Let us take you on a kayak tour to Mahee Island following a traditional smuggling route undertaken by Daft Eddie and the Merry Hearts. In Whiterock, you will be kitted out with wetsuit and buoyancy aid and briefed by local guides and kayak instructors. Rory grew up on Strangford Lough and has a real affinity and knowledge of the area, its waterways and heritage. At Mahee Island, Dr. Sarah Baccianti – researcher in literature and history of medieval Scandinavia. – will guide you through the ruins of the monastic site of Nendrum, life in the monastery in the Middle Ages, and the role played by the Vikings in the Strangford Lough area between the 9th and 11th centuries.

  1. Amanda Croft Lecture Series: The Face, Ulster Museum, Belfast, 28 January – 8 April. In this series of illustrated talks, explore questions that examine portraits from the collections of the Ulster Museum, Queen’s University, and other national and international galleries. From self-portraits and selfies to the dynamics of double and group portraits, ‘The Face: Catching a Likeness’ lecture series will delve into the diverse approaches to portraiture and its evolving role in art and society. There are 10 lectures in the series, taking place on a Tuesday, over 10 separate dates.

 

  1. Belfast Punk Music Walking Tour, Belfast, 8 February (more dates available). Come explore the story of punk music in Belfast on this walking tour, with a specialist music guide who has loved punk music since the 1970s. Since bands like The Outcasts, Rudi, Stiff Little Fingers, Ruefrex and Victim erupted onto the scene in Belfast back in the late 1970s, Belfast punk has held a special place in music history, near and far.

 

  1. Steinbeck Festival, Limavady, County Londonderry, 7 – 28 February. Roe Valley Arts & Cultural Centre has partnered with the Steinbeck Festival team to host the seventh annual celebration of John Steinbeck’s enduring legacy and his connection to Limavady. Running from 7–28 February, this vibrant festival offers something for everyone to enjoy across a dynamic programme of music, theatre, talks, art, and storytelling.

Creative Events to Inspire Children at Young Aspects

After a successful first year in 2024, Young Aspects is back with a weekend of writing and book events for young people and families.

Presented by Aspects Festival and Ards and North Down Borough Council, the programme offers a range of creative children’s events suitable for all ages.

Taking place from 28 February – 2 March, at various locations around Bangor, the diverse programme of reading, writing and art events promises to inspire young imaginations.

The renowned Book Doctors presented by Children’s Books Ireland, will be holding free ‘Book Clinics’ at Bangor Carnegie Library on Saturday 1 March. Come and see the Doctor with a difference! The Doctors will give each patient a unique ‘consultation’ and a personal prescription, recommending books based on the patient’s particular interests!

Local writer Tessa Ann from the Sound Healing Spa will bring her Sound Bath experience to Bangor Castle, alongside readings from her book, Magical Sounds with Echo Ta Ta and Friends for a delightful family event.

Young Aspects also features the ever-popular Woodland Chew and Yarn, a Digital Art Workshop, Book Binding, Writing Workshops, a Cosy Bedtime Story event and more! All perfect for your little readers, writers and artists.

The initiative is being launched across its 28 shops in Northern Ireland which are a vital community resource, offering affordable new and pre-loved clothing, giftware, household items, toys and accessories while supporting The Society of St Vincent de Paul.

‘Share the Love’ at Vincent’s encourages people to donate clean, wearable and undamaged garments and items, meaning shoppers can be assured that they can continue to purchase quality items that they have come to expect and love from their local Vincent’s.

“Unfortunately, we are unable to accept items that are unwearable or broken. Additionally, for safety reasons, we cannot accept electrical goods or personal safety items such as car seats and helmets. When people dispose of unsuitable items places an unnecessary financial burden on our charity – resources that could otherwise go toward helping those who need our help the most.

“By donating responsibly, the public is helping us to continue our vital work while sending a powerful message of care – for us, our volunteers and staff, the local community and the environment.”
