Have you ever thought about tracing your family tree and discovering more about local history, but aren’t sure where to begin?

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council are delighted to be joining forces once again with Lough Neagh Partnership and the Ulster Historical Society to bring you a free four week course, Family Home and Place beginning Monday 24 February which will help you gain some of the tools and resources for researching your family and local history.

Facilitated by Dr William Roulston, Research Director, Ulster Historical Foundation, you will cover exciting research during these informal classes including Maps; Archives; Census returns; Civil records of births, deaths and marriages; Church records; Valuation records – Griffith’s Valuation; Tithe Valuation; Valuation revision books; Landed estate papers; Wills and testamentary papers and School records. This course will conclude with a visit to the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland.

Dr William Roulston holds a PhD in Archaeology from Queen’s University Belfast and has written a number of books, including Fermanagh: History and Society (edited with Eileen Murphy, Dublin, 2004), Researching Scots-Irish Ancestors (Belfast, 2005), Restoration Strabane, 1660-1714 (Dublin, 2007), Three centuries of life in a Tyrone parish: a history of Donagheady from 1600 to 1900 (Strabane, 2010) and Abercorn: The Hamilton’s of Barons Court (Belfast, 2014).

Love is in the air at Belfast Zoo with the new Scottish wildcat couple!

Belfast Zoo’s new Scottish wildcat couple and native species, Oscar and Ossian, provide the zoo with an excellent opportunity to support the conservation of a national species, and they have arrived just in time for Valentine’s!

Ossian, Belfast Zoo’s new Scottish wildcat female, came from the Highlands Wildlife Park in Scotland and was born in May 2019. Oscar, the zoo’s new male, came from Alladale Wilderness Reserve in Scotland and was born in April 2019. Scottish wildcats face intense pressure with numbers continuing to drop rapidly each year, and it is hoped the zoo will be able to play a role in conserving this native species, fight the threat of extinction through breeding and help Scottish wildcat numbers grow.

The main threats affecting Scottish wildcats are hybridisation, disease and accidental persecution. Hybridisation is a term used to describe the cross breeding of pure Scottish wildcats with domesticated tabby or feral cat. Crossbreeding has led to a huge decline in pure Scottish Wildcat numbers in the wild. Disease can be transferred between feral cats and the Scottish wildcats when they cross breed and can cause huge health issues, even death to the Scottish wildcat. Scottish wildcats face intense pressure from farmers, bird keepers, game keepers and other parties due to accidental persecution as they are misidentified as feral cats. The latest addition to Belfast Zoo will provide the zoo with the opportunity to educate all our visitors about Scottish Wildcats and the threats they face. 

Alyn Cairns, Zoo Manager, said ‘It is a pleasure and fantastic opportunity for us to home such an iconic, native species, at Belfast Zoo. The Scottish wildcats face the threat of extinction as numbers diminish to record lows. Belfast Zoo continues to develop native species conservation efforts and with the arrival of the Scottish wildcats we hope that we can support the recovery of this iconic species. We have hopes of taking part in a new breeding programme with wildlife reserve partners in Scotland. It is hoped that the thirdgeneration of kittens from the new Scottish wildcat couple at Belfast Zoo will be released back into the wild. We would like to thank P&O ferries for sponsoring the travel of the Scottish wildcats to Belfast Zoo and look forward to hopefully seeing some adorable Scottish wildcat kittens soon!’’

3.       Michael-Palin-in-Conversation  Michael Palin in Conversation Magherafelt, 15 February. It has been 50 years since Michael Palin burst on to television screens as part of the anarchic comedy show Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Since then, Palin has become a national treasure through his writing, acting and documentary making. His travel writing and broadcasting has been acclaimed for the last 30 years and since his ground-breaking Around the World in 80 Days series, he has travelled from North Korea to the Sahara and from Pole to Pole.

4.       Toddlers-Take-Over-The-Museum Toddlers take over the museum Bangor, 14 February. The building will become a fun and exciting place for children aged 3-5 years old. Through the theme ‘Vikings’, kids will experience arts and crafts, storytelling and dancing. Come along and have fun at North Down Museum!

5.       Northern-Ireland-Puddle-Jumping-Championships NI Puddle Jumping Championships Newtownards, 15 – 20 February. Put on your wellies, get out into nature and have a splashing time. During the day, the festival offers a range of workshops, talks and interactive activities for young people, parents and schools. In the evening there will be an eclectic mix of scientific debate, talks, theatres, comedy, music and film for adults.

7.       Silent-Light Silent Light Coleraine, 9 – 23 February. Visitors will be steeped in the landscape, embarking on a silent walk to Mussenden Temple which sits perched at the edge of a 120ft cliff overlooking the North Atlantic Ocean. Within the Temple, an installation of the artist’s ‘Stained Moons’ artwork awaits. The viewings will take place in silence and in darkness, after twilight, for fourteen nights in February.

8.       Rustioni-conducts-Music-for-Valentines Rustioni Conducts Music for Valentine’s Belfast, 14 February. The Ulster Orchestra has had a long and treasured relationship with the pianist and conductor Howard Shelley, recording regularly together. Shelley is an elegant and delightful performer of Mozart, capable of bringing out all the charm and drama of the music. This concert is an opportunity to celebrate Shelley’s 70th birthday in fine musical style.

9.       Cosmic-Cuilcagh-Legnabrocky Cosmic Cuilcagh Enniskillen, 14 February. The Marble Arch Caves Visitor Centre, nestled in the foothills of Cuilcagh Mountain, is a perfect place to observe and learn more about the mysterious night sky. Join staff, the Irish Astronomical Association and Sirius Science for an exciting evening involving outdoor stargazing, a 3D show and an array of entertaining interactive indoor activities to include a Mighty Meteorite workshop and more.

10.   Stena-Line-Belfast-Giants-vs-Manchester-Storm Stena Line Belfast Giants VS Manchester Storm Belfast, 15 February. The acclaimed production Under the Hawthorn Tree is returning to Belfast in a presentation by the award-winning children’s theatre company, Cahoots NI and the MAC, featuring a star-studded cast including Frankie McCafferty and Julia Dearden. Based on the internationally acclaimed book by award-winning author Marita Conlon-McKenna Under the Hawthorn Tree follows the journey of three brave siblings as they fight for survival during the Potato Famine in Ireland, 1845.

2.       Kirkistown-Point-to-Point Kirkistown Point to Point Newtownards, 8 February. Point-to-point is the perfect day out for all the family where you can witness the future stars of the racing industry make their introduction into competitive racing. Unlike most racecourses, spectators can stand beside one of the fences and feel the power of the horses as they jump a fence in full flight. 3.       No-Other-Word-For-It No Other Word for it Derry~Londonderry, 26 January – 9 February. An immersive installation combining music, sculpture, light, text and video mapping by Ailís Ní Ríain.   Ailís Ní Ríain is an Irish contemporary classical composer and published writer for stage who aims to produce work that challenges, provokes and engages. A regular collaborator with artists in other art-forms, her artistic interests are diverse and combined with an unwavering desire to push and develop her artistic practice through each new project or commission.

4.       Belfast-Gin-School Belfast Gin School Belfast, 25 January – 28 March. Through experiential learning, with master distiller, Ian, you will have the opportunity to see gin being distilled, learn about flavour combinations and make your own. Built from 1613-1619, the Walls are the largest ancient monument in Northern Ireland, the only remaining Walled City in Ireland and one of the finest examples of Walled Cities in Europe.

This showcase of new works, curated by renowned artist Lorna Smyth, encompasses the four seasons in one year.
