Borne out of their own sons’ musical pursuits at young ages, Sunflowerfest organisers husband and wife Michael and Vanessa Magowan have worked tirelessly over the past years to develop the leading family-friendly force in the local music and arts scene.
Eva Keane, age 8, takes a time out to pose with Sunflowerfest’s KidsZone organisers Barra Doherty and Aoife Maguire at W5, Belfast, as the announcement is made of this year’s KidsZone line-up for the popular summer festival. Northern Ireland’s leading family-friendly music and arts festival, Sunflowerfest offers a full programme of events for young people which this year will incorporate the overall theme of ‘A Parallel Universe’ and highlight the partnerships with RSPB and NI Science Festival through interactive activities which will act as a fusion of art and science. For more information on this year’s family friendly offering at Sunflowerfest visit www.sunflowerfest.co.uk.
Each year Sunflowerfest fosters a family-friendly spirit of community, co-creation and inclusivity – in keeping with national WISE and GIST education initiatives – which will be seen on Tubby’s farm, 28th-30th July as the festival proudly showcases Northern Ireland’s technological and creative heritage, with installations across the site demonstrating a unique world-class fusion of art and science in keeping with this year’s overall festival theme, ‘A Parallel Universe.’
Having become an integral and respected part of local families’ summer diaries, with a huge range of interactive family-friendly music, art, theatre and comedy activities available across the weekend, the festival will have something to offer all backgrounds and interests. This year, an exciting new partnership with NI Science Festival will offer even more ambitious opportunities for young people to express their creativity in an inclusive and educational environment including features from W5, with more to be announced.
As always, Sunflowerfest’s KidsZone, led by Aoife Maguire and Barra Doherty, will deliver exciting arts activities that celebrate creativity and actively encourage the talents and imaginations of young people. Kids can look forward to getting their hands dirty with interactive arts and science projects as well as joining in on educational workshops in collaboration with Sunflowerfest charity partners RSPB and The Eden Project Communities, who will continue to give children opportunities to learn about the natural world and the greater community.
Following their time in the KidsZone, young people and their parents are also encouraged to get in touch with their inner bliss in the Tonic Health & Wellness area of the festival. Tonic @ Sunflowerfest will highlight a range of wellbeing options on offer for individuals and families providing a range of natural therapies, creativity & wellbeing, crafts, products, workshops, yoga, tai chi, dance, fitness, readings, a healthy kids area, sound baths, drumming circles and many other immersive performances and experiences, offering time-out to festival goers while promoting a healthy way of life.
“A summer music festival isn’t always the first place parents would think to take their kids, but Sunflowerfest has really cultivated a family friendly atmosphere over the years which organisers and guests alike have helped to nourish,” said Aoife Maguire, KidsZone organiser. “Not only are many of the kids’ activities hosted in a safe and secure dedicated space within the farm, but the camp sites as well are kept separate for families and non-families to ensure everyone gets the festival experience they desire, and this year there are added camping options for families including staying in sustainable cardboard ‘Kartents’ as well as glamping with Yippee tents. With all of us living such ‘plugged-in’ lifestyles these days, Sunflowerfest offers great opportunities for families to unplug, reconnect, and get back to nature on Tubby’s Farm.”
Continuing the legacy of last year’s Tourism NI’s Year of Food and Drink venue during the festival, organisers have also partnered with one of Northern Ireland’s most well-known home-grown eateries, Boojum, who will join forces this year to help keep families and artists fed and watered for the duration of the festival.
Guests of all ages can also look forward to additional foodie treats including, cooking demonstrations, bake offs and tastings by catering students from SERC, Lisburn showcasing the best in Northern Irish food and drink.
Staunch advocates of getting young people involved in music at a young age, this year’s festival will see the introduction of two unique programmes which will prove Sunflowerfest’s investment in helping to foster the next generation of talent. Up-and-coming talent will take to the stage after coming through the Sunflowerfest ‘Roots’ and ‘School of Rock’ programmes which have seen young musicians and bands paired with industry experts to gain advice and training to help achieve their musical dreams.
Sunflowerfest, a community interest company acknowledges Tourism NI, Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council and 2017 charity partner, RSPB for their support in continuing to make Sunflowerfest the leading family-friendly festival in Northern Ireland.
Early bird tickets have sold out but Tier 2 Tickets for Sunflowerfest now available at just £74.95 (includes 2 children, aged 15 and under) and £64.95 for students – now available online at www.sunflowerfest.co.uk. Additional bands, artists, and activities will be announced via Sunflowerfest’s website, Facebook, and Twitter.
CHILDREN throughout Ireland are being invited to ‘Roar For Rory’ and win some fabulous prizes for their school and family as part of a nationwide competition organised by the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open hosted by the Rory Foundation.
The ‘Roar For Rory’ competition will give two lucky children across the island of Ireland a chance to win a unique opportunity for their schools to host a visit from the prestigious Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Trophy – as well as a family pass and VIP Tour at the tournament during Pro-Am day.
To enter the competition, children of all ages – or their parents and teachers – should simply submit a short video or fun photograph of themselves, their friends or classmates shouting ‘Come on Rory’ (or any other player they choose) in support of Dubai Duty Free Irish Open 2016 champion Rory McIlroy and the other top golfers who will be competing for what has become one of the most sought after titles on the European Tour.
Entries should be sent to roarforrory@duffyrafferty.com along with contact details clearly stating the child’s name, age, address and school.
Alternatively, parents and teachers can tweet their videos and photos to @ddfirishopen or post on the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Facebook page with the hashtags #ddfirishopen and #roarforrory.
Closing date for entries is Wednesday June 7 with the prize to be taken by June 23 or before the end of term.
The two winning children, as chosen by the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open judging panel, will receive an amazing ‘money can’t buy’ prize package that includes a chance to get their hands on the prestigious trophy, a Q&A session with representatives of the European Tour and Rory Foundation at their school, and an insight into the life of a professional golfer from Ireland’s Dubai Duty Free golf ambassador Des Smyth. Each winning pupil’s class will also receive tickets to go to the Pro-Am on Wednesday July 5.
Not only that, the two winning children will each receive a family pass for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Pro-Am and a VIP tour with a chance to see Rory and some of the world’s top golfers up close.
The European Tour’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Championship Director Simon Alliss said: “We’re thrilled to launch this fun competition for children. We can’t wait to see them ‘Roar for Rory’ and show their support for defending champion Rory McIlroy and the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open tournament that he has hosted so successfully for the past three years.
“It is such a great way for kids to get involved with such a huge and important sporting event in the island of Ireland’s sporting calendar which attracts so many high-profile professional golfers and worldwide interest,” he added.
Brian McIlroy of the Rory Foundation said: “Our annual children’s competition is such an important part of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open and something that Rory himself is very passionate about as it encourages kids to become involved in golf or even to take the sport up at a young age.
“What is so fantastic this year is that children now have an opportunity to show us – and Rory – how much they are supporting this year’s tournament in the form of a video or photo. We’re all looking forward to seeing the enthusiasm and passion that school children from both the North and South of Ireland have for Rory and the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open,” added Brian.
The 2017 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Hosted by the Rory Foundation is set to be the biggest in the tournament’s history, with an increased prize fund of US$7million to be matched by an enhanced fan experience outside of the ropes.
A portion of all tickets sales this year will go towards the Rory Foundation which was established by McIlroy in 2013 to help children live better lives by raising funds and offering support to children’s charities around the world.
The tournament enables the Rory Foundation to build a platform for positive change reaching into the community and developing innovative initiatives to help children and young people in most need. Sport Changes Life are the primary beneficiary of this year’s tournament.

‘Road Racing People’ is a collection of 26 portraits by internationally renowned motorcycle racing photographer, Stephen Davison.

Together, they create a must-see attraction for all road racing fans.”
