Baby Rave First in Bangor!

A new highlight for many families this 18th & 19th June is the free Baby Rave at this year’s Sea Bangor Festival.

This unique child-sized rave is complete with DJ, lighting, projections and dancers to help you and your babies move and groove. Experiment with contemporary music and dance, in an ambient environment.  Baby Rave  is a fun event exclusively for this often overlooked age-group, it captures the pzazz of the parents’ nights out pre-baby, and gives mothers – and fathers- and tots a real sense of rhythm.

The Baby Rave is being brought to Sea Bangor by Belfast-based Young at Art, devised by director Ali Fitzgibbon and DJ (Lyndon Stephens). Baby Rave has now gone global, travelling to Australia for the Adelaide Fringe Festival in March 2007 and it was a sell out success in Edinburgh Bank of Scotland Children’s International Theatre Festival, Babaro Children’s Festival in Galway, the Norfolk and Norwich Festival and St.Patrick’s Festival in Dublin.

Each Baby Rave, lasts for one hour and will be held at 12.00, 1.30 pm and 3.00 pm.  The event is free and suitable for under 5s.

Sea Bangor has lots of other children’s activities too! For something more relaxed, Young at Arts are also hosting Interactive Story Telling in Kids Zone.  Each Tea and Tales session is led by a  story telling specialist who takes time out to join children on a journey through their favourite children’s stories. So pull up a bean bag and chill out! Tea and Tall Tales will be held from 10.00 am until 11.30 and from 4.00 – 6.00 pm.

For the more adventurous of you, how about walking on water without getting wet? Water Walkerz are inflatable ‘walk on water’ balls which let you run, roll, flip and spin on water. Step inside these giant hamster balls and propel yourself across the surface of the pool – they’re giant balls of fun!

For older kids, on The Eisenhower Pier, the Armed Forces will be hosting a whole range of displays and activities, including a climbing wall, shooting range and lots more. The Pier will also be animated with a range of quirky Maritime – themed street theatre.

As well as, live music, gardening, live cookery demonstrations, Bangor Bob’s Maritime Marvels and a whole lot more, this year’s Sea Bangor Festival is guaranteed to be the best yet!

Fat Chance!

Northern Ireland families needed now to star in new TV Health show

Does your family have the wrong diet and wrong attitude? Do you do enough exercise? Do you shop badly and can’t cook? If the answer to these questions is ‘Yes’, don’t worry, as help is on the way.

A new BBC NI television series is giving you the chance to help change your family’s life forever.

Tern Television is creating a new television series for BBC Northern Ireland called Fat Chance. We are looking for three families (mums, dads and children) with weight issues to take part in an intensive, expert-led weight loss programme this summer which will take stock of their health issues and give them a real chance to change their lives forever.

In this series, the three families will spend one week in a secret location where some of the nation’s best experts in Nutrition, Health, Psychotherapy and Fitness will help set them on the road to recovery. In a course of specialist treatments they will be given the chance to change. Then in the following weeks, they will be sent home to put what they’ve learnt to the test.

We’re looking for outgoing families with weight issues that are making them unhappy and unhealthy but who most of all want the chance to change.

If you and your family are Overweight and potentially putting yourselves at increased risk of Diabetes, Heart Disease and a variety of Cancers, we want to hear from you. We want people who are willing to share their stories with the nation to ultimately show us all how we can tackle our growing obesity problem.

The treatment programmes our families will undergo would normally cost thousands of pounds, but for the people who take part in the show it will be completely free.

For further information on how to take part, contact the Fat Chance team, Peter or Gohir at fatchance@terntv.com

Glasgowbury gears up for a laugh!

As well as showcasing upwards of 50 acts across five different stages at this year’s festival, Glasgowbury have just announced the introduction of a comedy stage for this year’s event.

Due to be headlined by Father Damo himself (Joe Rooney), a total of eight comedians will turn the iconic G Spot stage into the Giggle Spot for an evening of rapturous humour.

Based on the same premise as the festival’s music platform, the Giggle Spot will showcase a wealth of up-and-coming comedians before being headlined by some established Irish talent.

Joe Rooney, who made his name as Father Damo in the iconic Father Ted series, will use his unique brand of humour to cap off the first ever Glasgowbury comedy stage.

Known to audiences throughout Ireland as the whistle thief, Rooney later became a household name for his portrayal of Timmy Higgins in RTE comedy Killinaskully.

Joining him for Glasgowbury’s inaugural comedy bash will be John Colleary (who also made his name on RTE by featuring on Savage Eye), Colin Geddis (I Am Fighter), Micky Barlett, Adam Laughlin, Raidhri Ward, Shane Todd and Sean Hegarty.

Festival organiser Paddy Glasgow said he was excited to be adding a new element to the festival.

“Comedy is something that we’ve been looking at introducing for a couple of years now and I’m excited to be able to offer that extra platform.

“Over the years we’ve tried to celebrate the best in new music and in recent years we’ve also welcomed elements of carnival and other forms of art and entertainment,” he said.

“So hopefully this will offer another platform to aspiring artists and have people smiling even more on the day.”

The comedy stage will be run in conjunction with Panic Dots.

Glasgowbury 2011 takes place on Saturday 23rd July and headline acts so far announced include Cashier No. 9, The Answer, Phil Kieran, LaFaro, Boxcutter, Foy Vance and Mojo Fury.

Tickets are on sale now from www.hmvtickets.com, see www.glasgowbury.com for more information.

This year’s line-up boasts a host of top notch visitors such as Phil Campbell, game creator and designer whose credits include Heavy Rain, Tomb Raider and Thor.

Also visiting is Karen Nicol, one of the world’s most renowned embroidery and mixed media textile artists. Her ‘A’ list clients include Givenchy, Clements Ribeiro and Chanel.

Russell Mills, who designed album covers for amongst others Brian Eno, Bob Marley and Miles Davis, will be talking about his work as a designer, musician and artist.

The Festival also hosts the students’ End of Year Show, the annual large-scale exhibition which is a showcase for today’s emerging talent and an ideal opportunity for visitors to buy work from young up and coming stars.

And the Ulster Fashion Show is another favourite, featuring garments created by final year students for their spectacular catwalk extravaganza.

The Festival has joined forces with local band And So I Watch You From Afar and video artist Seamus Harahan to produce a unique advertising campaign – keep your ears and eyes peeled for this specially commissioned work.
Tim Kerr the Festival Director said: “This year’s Festival has a great mix of events featuring artists and designers who are at the top in their field.

“I think we are all becoming much more conscious and concerned about the world around us – how our streets look, what we wear, how we communicate – these are all products of design and they are a growing part of our everyday life and lifestyle.

“The Festival gives us the chance to hear and meet some of the biggest names in art and design, the freshest and most dynamic new thinkers in our design-conscious world.”

Michael Johnston, Managing Partner at Carson McDowell, the Festival’s principal sponsor said: “We are delighted to sponsor the 2011 Ulster Festival of Art and Design as part of our ongoing commitment to supporting the arts, education and the community.

“We believe that the arts help to define and enrich communities. The University’s Belfast campus is a hub of creativity and we are pleased to support the innovation and excellence which has become its hallmark.
