Brighten up the dark nights at the Seapark Fireworks, Holywood

Trick or Treat?!

There’s a chill in the air and some spooky goings on, as Holywood gets ready for its annual Seapark Fireworks Display on Saturday 23 October 2010.

This fun annual event, that takes place at the Seapark Recreational Grounds, Holywood is the perfect remedy to the approaching dark nights with its mix of music, entertainment and glittering fireworks.

Crowds at this year’s event will be able to keep the cold night at bay with wonderful soul warming food made from the freshest and finest ingredients from 5pm.

There will be tantalising gourmet burgers from the Lisburn Road based Rocket & Relish, delicious Asian Noodles from Tuk n Tuk and traditional fish and chips from Gina’s Diner to name but a few.

But seeing as the cold weather will be biting, maybe you’ll want to take comfort in some hearty soup and chunky crusty bread from The Bay Tree or perhaps some sausages and champ from Superchamp.

We haven’t even begun to tell you about the other parts of the event that include a children’s funfair that will be open from 4:30pm, or that Holywood favourites ‘The Jukes’ will be taking to the stage from 6:30pm followed by show stopping fireworks from 8pm that will bring the event to a close.

Commenting on the event, Wendy Smith, North Down Borough Council said, “We’re looking forward to another great night at Seapark this year – good food, good music and spectacular fireworks – perfect ingredients for a fun night for all the family.  Make sure you wrap up warm and bring a torch!”

So come along and join the fun on Saturday 23 October 2010, from 4:30pm at the Seapark Recreational Grounds, Holywood.

For further information on this event please contact Bangor Tourist Information Centre on (028) 9127 0069 or email tic@northdown.gov.uk.

THE MAGIC NUMBERS ANNOUNCE IRISH TOUR

The Magic Numbers have announced an intimate date at The Spring & Airbrake on Tuesday 7th  December as part of an Irish tour which they will play:

Thu 2 December:      KILLARNEY, The Acoustic Room at the INEC
Fri 3 December:       CORK, The Pavilion
Sat 4 December:       GALWAY, Roisin Dubh
Sun 5 December:      DUBLIN, Whelan’s
Tue 7 December:      BELFAST, Spring & Airbrake

Tickets for Spring & Airbrake are priced £15 and are on sale this Thursday, 7 October at 9am. Special guests for the tour will be Dry The River.

At the end of 2007, The Magic Numbers finally took their feet off the gas after almost four years on the road. Two albums released in quick succession – 2005’s The Magic Numbers and 2006’s Those The Brokes – had made them platinum-selling chart stars, but toil had taken its toll, culminating one night in a heated, all-family fall-out. The Stodarts and Gannons realised it was time to stop. They needed to reconnect with the joy that music had always given them, and remember the sparks that first flew when Romeo and Sean started playing together as teenagers in a front room in Hanwell, West London, and the fortuitous moments when their sisters Michele and Angela joined them – originally just providing backing vocals then quickly fulfilling and completing their unique sound. Only now, with their real knowledge of the studio, their confidence as songwriters, and their ever-growing love of a wider orchestra of instruments, they could create something they’d always dreamed of.

The band needed to find themselves again outside of each other and so took some time out to work on other inspirational projects. Romeo was invited by Damon Albarn to join his Africa Express project, leading him over to Lagos, Nigeria. He spent an immensely rewarding time working with many African musicians, including Amadou and Mariam, with whom he collaborated on the song All I Believe In, featured on the Twilight: New Moon soundtrack. Alongside this, he played guitar for numerous other artists, both onstage and in the studio, an experience that inspired and rejuvenated him as he began to write. Michele was busy working on songs for her future solo album, whilst preparing for the life-changing experience of becoming a mother to a beautiful baby girl, Maisie. Angela also found time to work with her friends The Boxer Rebellion on their last album. But it was only a matter of time before The Magic Numbers fell back into each other’s arms and got back to work.

After two years away they’ve managed to craft their finest record to date with love and ambition. The Magic Numbers are back, and more special than ever.

Imagine a record that begins with a song so grand and so glorious that it sounds like it’s descending from the heavens, asking us what it is to love, and what it is to feel. Imagine the album that soars from its searching, stirring strings, shifting beautifully between perfect pop, heart-wrenching soul and country folk, woozy with harmonies and deep, dreamy melodies. Imagine it arriving in the world after the birth of a new child, and the death of the man who helped bring it to life.

That record is The Runaway.

Tickets for The Magic Numbers Irish tour are on sale this Thursday at 9am.

A tasty lunchtime treat with the Ulster Orchestra

Busy Belfast shoppers and office workers are being urged to take a well-deserved lunch break this week and head down to the Ulster Hall for a feast of a different kind.

The Ulster Orchestra’s new lunchtime concert series, supported by JTI, kicks off on Wednesday 6 October with music by Rossini, Borodin and Smetana and a solo appearance by the Orchestra’s very own Martin Wilson, who plays Ferdinand David’s Concertino for trombone and orchestra.

The monthly concerts – always held on a Wednesday – will start at 1.05pm and end no later than 1.55pm, giving people working nearby the Ulster Hall time to get back to work.

NI Sporting Stars Launch Dairy Council’s ‘Milk in Action’ Website

International rugby professional Bryan Young and rising sports star, pro-biker Jacob Dickson, urged young people to ‘Milk it for all it’s Worth’ today as they helped launch a dynamic new website from the Dairy Council for Northern Ireland.

www.milkitforallitsworth.eu is designed to deliver a fun, high impact, digital resource that explains the nutritional qualities of milk in a way that will resonate with the younger generation in Northern Ireland, especially those involved in sport.

The ‘Milk it for all it’s Worth’ site offers an interactive way of learning about the benefits of the nutrients milk provides through its quizzes and games and downloadable video clips. It provides users the chance to upload their own videos as well as the opportunity to win great prizes at its competition section.

Commenting on the new website, rugby star, Bryan Young, said: “My father is a dairy farmer so I know only too well the benefits of drinking milk. I’ve grown up drinking milk and enjoy it first and foremost because of its taste and secondly because I think you can’t beat the stuff for its nutritional value.

“I’d recommend that young sports people or anyone who enjoys being active check out the ‘Milk it for all it’s Worth’ website. It’s a fantastic and fun site where you can get some tips on how to eat healthy so that you can give your best performance, whether you’re into rugby, dance, snowboarding or athletics.”

Twelve year old biker Jacob Dickson from Dromore, added: “This website is seriously cool. It tells you what you need to know about milk in an exciting way.  I always knew that milk was good for me but if I’m honest I didn’t really understand the number of nutrients in milk and their benefits.

“Mountain biking and BMXing can be pretty intense so it’s important that I have the energy to keep going, especially during competitions. The website has helped me understand how the nutrients in milk such as calcium, protein, vitamin B12 and B2, iodine and potassium can help with an active lifestyle”

Visit www.milkitforallitsworth.eu for yourself to see how a balanced diet can improve your game and to be in with a chance to win some itune vouchers!

The ‘Milk it for all it’s Worth’ website is part of the Dairy Council’s ongoing Milk in Action campaign. The initiative is financed with aid from the European Union.

Calling all greenfingers!

Grab your wellies and your trowel and come to Minnowburn in Belfast on Saturday 9 October to help National Trust staff and volunteers plant 1,000 Bluebell bulbs.  Even if you don’t know your dicotyledon from your morifolium the National Trust needs your help to plant the bulbs in a new part of the wood.

Visitors to Minnowburn in previous years have enjoyed the colourful carpet of bluebells that lead up to the old rose garden at Terrace Hill. The wash of blue is an all too familiar sight and the intense colour and sweet scent that comes from this delicate perennial make it a breathtaking spectacle when out and about.  The display of colour next spring in the newly planted area will be stunning.

Unfortunately the popular plant is an endangered species. Despite the UK playing host to half of the world’s population of bluebells the number of bluebells we see on our travels is on a steady decline.  The Spanish bluebell is frequently planted in gardens and over the years hybridised with the native bluebell to form a hybrid.   This hybrid is threatening the population of the pure native bluebell.

As Northern Ireland’s largest conservation charity, the National Trust relies on its volunteers for support and extra hands for bulb planting will be very welcome.  It’s a great way to spend a lovely autumnal day, getting soil under your fingers and being out in the fresh, crisp air.  Bring the children along too and engage little minds with nature.

The woodlands at Minnowburn play host to a diverse range of flora and fungi and the trees will alive with autumn colour, so make sure you come along on the 9 October.

Meet at Minnowburn car park at 11am.
