Northern Ireland’s McPeake have launched their debut EP ‘Gypsies in the Wood’ and are appearing at Down Arts Centre on Friday 15th September before heading back to Nashville.   McPeake are a unique Irish trio that have developed a soul stirring, emotive sound that is genuine and classic yet contemporary.  A band with a rare combination of tradition and innovation laced with pop lyrics and radio friendly hooks on traditional instruments. The Richhill Grand Fete, Auction & Craft Fair takes place this Saturday 9th September.  There will be 30+ stalls from local crafters, including handmade crafts, jewellery, art works, home bakes, wood works, bespoke hats and fascinators, decoupage and pamper products along with all sorts of local produce including fruit and veg, shrubs and flowers. For the younger visitors there will be face painting, lego, jewellery making and organised children’s activities.  There will also be a dog show with prizes. This Friday 8th September, acclaimed dancer Jean Butler premieres a deeply personal performance inspired by Heaney’s final collection, Human Chain at Seamus Heaney Homeplace Bellaghy.  Collaborators include Cara Butler, Kristyn Fontanella and Joseph Hunt.  New York-based choreographer and performer Jean Butler first came to prominence as principal dancer and co-choreographer of Riverdance and Dancing on Dangerous Ground. Jean is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Irish Post Award for her outstanding contribution to Irish dance.

The UPU Plough Fest is coming to Hillsborough’s Plough Inn from Thursday 24th – Saturday 26th August. Aimed at keeping the spirit of the Hillsborough Oyster Festival alive, this festival is not to be missed by locals and foodies across the UK and Ireland. On the Trail of Martel, Wild Caving Expedition, Wednesday 16th August. Delve off the beaten track to explore ‘wild’ caving, deep inside the Marble Arch Caves System. Meander through cave passages, climb through boulder chambers and squeeze though the famous flyover to emerge into the Marble Arch Showcave, before making your way out, muddy but proud!   This event is not suitable for children under 12 years old or those with limited mobility. All participants must be of moderate level of fitness and reasonably agile. Wear old clothes and wellies. Weather dependant. This is a free event, but booking is essential.

Parkanaur House is the setting for the 15th Annual Castlecaulfield Horticultural Show and Vintage Rally this Saturday 19th August. This year’s Lumarina Festival will be Lighting Up the Lough this weekend!  On Friday 18 August, from 6pm – 10pm, Mid Ulster District Council will shine a light on the beauty of Lough Neagh, as Ballyronan Marina provides the backdrop for an evening of music and entertainment. Featuring fireworks, fire performers, a fun fair, children’s activities and food stalls, you can drink in the views from the Marina as dusk turns to night skies, to a live music soundtrack provided by Peach. The fun continues on the shores of Lough Neagh on Saturday 19th August from 2pm – 6pm, with arts and crafts activities for the little ones, African drumming workshops, and magic shows.

The Carnlough Bikefest and Family Fun Day takes place this Sunday 20th August.  The Motorcycle ride out  from Carnlough to Portrush and back leaves at 10.30am. BuskFest is an international busking festival which takes place in Banbridge on Saturday 12th August. Now in its 14th year, the event attracts 6000+ people from across the globe to Banbridge Town Centre. The competition, which has a prize pot of £3000, runs from 1pm – 4.30pm and will culminate in an awards ceremony hosted by BBC Radio Ulster’s Ralph McLean in Solitude Park from 4.30pm – 6pm.

Once again it’s blues that’s on the agenda, this being the 7th year of the 7 Hills Blues Festival 10th to 13th August.  This annual celebration will feature over 50 bands at venues across Armagh, with some regular artists back alongside some great new performers. The Clans of Ulster celebrates Lunása Spirit of Folk Festival on 12 August at Tullyhogue Fort, near Cookstown, from 11am-11pm.  The event is being hosted by The Clans of Ulster, and commemorates the ancient tradition of Lunása, which was celebrated all over Ireland, Scotland, and Europe.  It marks the end of summer and celebrates the harvest season, while honouring the role of the ancient Celtic ways.  It will include family fun, with a celebration of food, music, sport, and art. There will be plenty to see and do including visiting stalls from local food artisans and local crafts.  There is also a chance to participate in the Celtic warrior workshop, and see & learn about birds of prey with the NI School of Falconry.

Stendhal Festival is Northern Ireland’s biggest and best grass-roots music and arts festival.  With over 100 performances from the likes of Ash, The Magic Numbers, Sharon Shannon and Lisa McHugh taking place over August 11th and 12th at Ballymully Cottage Farm, Limavady, there is certainly plenty of musical variety as well as a dedicated family programme that caters for children and families of all ages.

Allow qualified guides to take you on a leisurely ramble across Church Bay and into Mill Bay on Rathlin Island this Sunday 13th August.  Along the way discuss the island’s history, its people and its unique wildlife. You will be given plenty of opportunities to meet the local seal colony who bask along the shoreline and time to visit the bird sanctuary if you wish before returning to Ballycastle on the 4:15pm ferry.  The guide will meet you in Ballycastle at the ferry terminal at 11am and accompany you on the crossing.  Price of the tour (£10) does not include the ferry travel. Musicians, singers, bands and solo artists are being invited to showcase their musical talent in this exciting competition. Each Busker will be allocated a pitch to compete along with a time slot to perform in the civic space in Upper Market Square where a canopy stage and sound system will be in place. In aid of Foyle Hospice. The Causeway Coast Model, Craft and Food Fest is taking place between 2.00pm and 9.00pm on Thursday 3rd August 2017 at the Lodge Hotel, Coleraine.  The event will feature a wide range of stands with toys and models  for all ages.  Local enthusiasts will also be displaying some of their models and layouts.  A wide array of stands with locally produced craft products will have their wares available.  Food stands will also be at the Show. So if you are looking  farm toys or models, cars, lorries, buses for young or old come along and see what you might find.

2017 is the 27th anniversary of Heart of the Glens Festival (5th to 13th August),  one of the most successful community festivals in Northern Ireland. Learn or refresh your memory on how people hand cut peat, listen to stories from days gone by in the bog and take part in some bog pool dipping activities along with many more fun interactive activities which will be available for the day. Take a journey into the colourful world of Lego animation this Saturday 29th July with a mini animation masterclass at Ranfurly House Dungannon, which will teach participants how to make a complete animated film on an iPad, including sound effects visual effects, and planning your film.  Parents/guardians will be emailed a QuickTime movie of their child’s film at the end of the masterclass to keep or upload to YouTube.  Suitable for ages 7-10 years.

The Red Sails Festival, which runs this week until Saturday 29th July, is a festival of entertainment in the beautiful coastal resort of Portstewart. A fabulous week combining a diverse range of entertainment centred on the Promenade Portstewart with live music, culture, dance, competitions and ending with a spectacular firework show all organised by Portstewart Community Association For the full line up see redsails.co.uk.

Antrim

This Friday and Saturday, 28th and 29th July, the world-famous Armoy Road Race takes place once again in and around the picturesque County Antrim village close to the breath taking Glens of Antrim, Ballycastle and the world famous Giant’s Causeway. The three mile circuit harks back to the 1970’s and the days of the legendary Armoy Armada including the famous Joey Dunlop, but has been brought bang up to date by the organisers. The Road Race is getting bigger and better every year with competitors from all over the world. Spectators also come from far and wide and extend their stay to enjoy the beautiful Causeway Coast and Glens area. A thrilling two day experience for all to enjoy.

Belfast

Stormont Estate will be hosting BBC One’s Antiques Roadshow at Parliament Buildings, on Saturday 29 July. The roadshow will be open to everyone, no tickets needed, just come along and enjoy the day!  The event opens at 9:30am and as long as you are in the main queue by 4:30pm you will be seen by one of the Roadshow specialists. Please note filming ill continue until 7pm and visitors are encouraged to stay on and watch the show being recorded.

Calling all campers – the RSPB’s Big Wild Sleepout is back for 2017 and you’re invited!   The nature charity’s most popular family event of the year will take place on Saturday 22nd July at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum in Cultra, County Down.  The museum is the perfect place for families to try camping for the first time. Toilet facilities, 24-hour security and designated safe spaces to cook and camp mean you can get on with just having fun!  Big Wild Sleepout tickets are priced at £20 for adults and £17 for children. Kids under four go completely free.

Armagh

Enjoy a Guided Tour of Armagh this Summer! For those who want to explore everything the City has to offer, a guided walking tour is a must.  You’ll walk through Armagh’s rich history as you hear stories and anecdotes about the area, learn about the city’s renowned Georgian architecture and stroll along the distinct cobble streets as you unearth some of the city’s hidden gems along the way.  Tour times:   Each Wednesday to Saturday 11am – 12:00 noon and 1:00pm – 2.00pm until the 2nd September.

Fermanagh

” Stop it Nurse” is an hilarious Ulster comedy by Sam Cree. Set in a Belfast hospital during the 60s the Ward Sister rules the roost! We follow the fortunes and misfortunes of the patients in the male surgical ward. With all the ingredients for a typical evening of pure Cree manic magic, Stop it Nurse runs at the Ardhowen Theatre for three nights only from 20th to 22nd July.

Tyrone

The Super Milk Wild Air Run, St Columb’s Park, 22nd July,  is a dynamic fun run featuring 10 giant inflatable obstacles as part of a 5k course. It includes Europe’s largest inflatable slide which is 60M long!  The event can be undertaken by all fitness levels. The 10 obstacles combine agility, creativity and a vast amount of fun. The event is for both adults and children, seven years and up, and is a very enjoyable day for anyone from 7 to 70.

Take a walk in the country at The Antrim Show this Saturday 22nd July.  From cookery demonstrations by Paula McIntyre in the Festival of Food marquee, to livestock, sheep shearing and horse jumping competitions there’s plenty to keep all of the family amused. The Portaferry Gala Festival is celebrating 50 years this year and is offering some spectacular new events to mark the anniversary from 15th to 21st July.  The festival highlights are an opening extravaganza with live band, The Pitching the Sheaf Competition, live band Ritchie Remo, kids fancy dress, open air boxing, comedy play, live radio, youth challenge and Xbox event, paper boat race, live wrestling, 10 mile run, tea dance for seniors and main highlight of the week annual float parade display of fabulous floats and other carnival entertainment.

During July, Craftswirl at the Armagh Visitor Information Centre will host a beautiful exhibition by Leona Devine.  Leona is an honours graduate in Fine and Applied Art from the University of Ulster, where she specialised in Ceramics. In 2014 Leona was awarded the Tyrone Guthrie Centre Regional Bursary by the Roe Valley Arts and Heritage Committee.  Leona’s work is greatly inspired by the natural landscape and environment where she lives and works. Based in the countryside, she draws inspiration from the rural landscape and the animals which inhabit it.
